The Opportunity
Uphold Justice. Serve Community. Lead with Integrity. The City of Coppell is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Alternate Municipal Judge and State of Texas Magistrate. This unique opportunity offers the ability to exercise independent judicial authority while ensuring the fair and impartial administration of justice in one of North Texas' most service-oriented communities. Working alongside dedicated court and public safety professionals, the Alternate Municipal Judge presides over Class C misdemeanor cases, conducts hearings and trials, reviews warrants, and performs magistrate duties that directly support public safety and quality of life. This position serves on an as-needed basis and offers the flexibility to maintain private practice or judicial service with other jurisdictions, provided there is no conflict with assigned responsibilities. Schedule Commitment
This position serves on an as-needed basis as scheduled by the Presiding Municipal Judge and requires availability outside of typical business hours, including evenings, weekends, and City-observed holidays, to fulfill judicial and magistrate responsibilities. The Alternate Municipal Judge serves on an on-call basis and may be required to be available at least two weekends per month, beginning on Fridays, as well as most City-observed holidays. As assigned, the Alternate Municipal Judge may also preside over municipal court proceedings during regular weekday business hours.
Outside employment, including private practice or service as a municipal judge for other jurisdictions, may be maintained provided it does not create a conflict of interest or interfere with assigned responsibilities.
Pay Plan
This opportunity is non-exempt and paid an hourly rate of $125.

Eligibility
Experience
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
- 2+ years of experience practicing law in the State of Texas.
- Ability to meet and maintain all mandatory minimum continuing education requirements for Texas Municipal Court Judges.
Preferred
- 7+ years of experience practicing law in the State of Texas.
- 3+ years of municipal court experience.
- 3+ years of magistrate or magistrate court experience.
- Prior judicial experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws affecting a Municipal Court of Record and applicable court policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of Municipal Justice Case Management System software (formerly Incode) is preferred, as well as LEADRS, PSRS, and CJIS.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Zoom; bilingual proficiency is preferred.
Skills
- Skill in interpreting, analyzing, and applying legal principles, statutes, ordinances, court rules, and judicial procedures.
- Skill in reading, composing, reviewing, and editing legal documents, orders, warrants, judgments, and related materials.
- Skill in conducting legal research and maintaining current knowledge of judicial developments and applicable laws.
- Skill in analytical thinking, organization, time management, and oral and written communication.
Abilities
- Ability to address highly complex legal issues and exercise sound judgment on matters of significant importance to the City while maintaining impartiality, integrity, and judicial independence.
- Ability to function effectively in a team environment and demonstrate a collaborative work style while preserving the ethical standards required of an unbiased judicial authority.
- Ability to engage effectively with elected officials, City personnel, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, private attorneys, defendants, detained individuals, and members of the public.
- Ability to analyze information, manage multiple assignments, and provide timely and effective services.
- Ability to effectively operate in a paper-light, electronic environment.
