As a Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO), you will work with a highly trained team to protect American interests and secure our nation. Typical Assignments Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations. Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances. Determine the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States. Prevent illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods, including the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband. Salary and Incentives Incentives can be up to $15,000 per year for a three‑year service contract in the following duty locations: Arizona: Douglas, Lukeville, Nogales, San Luis California: Calexico Hawaii: Honolulu Maine: Calais, Eastport, Houlton, Jackman, Madawaska, Van Buren, Vanceboro Michigan: Detroit, Port Huron, Sault Sainte Marie Minnesota: Grand Portage, International Falls Montana: Raymond, Sweetgrass New York: Alexandria Bay, Champlain, Massena, Trout River North Dakota: Dunseith, Portal Vermont: Beecher Falls, Derby Line, Highgate Springs, Norton, Richford Washington: Blaine, Oroville For newly appointed CBPOs, incentives may be up to $15,000 per year for a four‑year service contract in these locations: California: Otay Mesa, San Francisco, San Ysidro, Tecate Florida: Key West North Dakota: Pembina Annual Base Salary GS‑5 and GS‑7 salaries range from $40,332 to $109,952 per year. Locality pay varies by duty location. A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary. This is a career‑ladder position with promotion opportunities to GS‑9, GS‑11, and GS‑12 based on performance and duration in each grade level. Qualifications GS‑5: Minimum of three (3) years of full‑time general work experience, or a bachelor’s degree, or a combination of both. GS‑7: Minimum of one (1) year of specialized full‑time work experience equivalent to the preceding grade level, or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (≥3.0 GPA) or one year of graduate‑level education, or a combination of the two. GS‑9: Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify. Other Requirements Citizenship: U.S. citizen required. Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years. Age Restriction: Candidates must be referred before reaching 40 years of age (with certain exceptions for veterans and current federal civilian law enforcement). Veterans’ Preference: Eligible for excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA). Formal Training: Two‑week paid pre‑academy orientation followed by a 101‑day CBP Field Operations Academy. Candidates placed in southern border, Miami, or Puerto Rico duty locations must complete an online Spanish training program.
