Job Summary Pay Rate: Non‑Represented Pay Band E03 – $105,044.00 / annually (Minimum) to $159,143.00 / annually (Maximum) Starting Negotiable Salary Offer: $105,044.00 – $115,403.50, commensurate with experience and education. Reports To: Manager of Vehicle Systems Engineering or designee. Current Assignment: Establish an eligibility pool for vacancies that may arise within the next twelve (12) months. The Vehicle Systems Engineering Department has two vacant Junior Vehicle Systems Engineer positions. Note: One candidate will be assigned to the Electrical division and one to the Mechanical division in the Vehicle Systems Engineering group. Ideal Candidate Electrical Vehicle Systems Engineering (VSE) Group: A degree in Electrical Engineering with demonstrated competency in writing reports and technical procedures. Experience with electrical power systems, microcontroller devices, ethernet networking, and other electric and electro‑mechanical systems. Hands‑on exposure in a fast‑paced operational environment with a focus on safety, reliability, sustainability, and innovation. Mechanical Vehicle Systems Engineering (VSE) Group: A degree in Mechanical Engineering. Experience maintaining and improving BART’s fleet of rail vehicles, including mechanical, propulsion, braking, and electro‑mechanical systems. Same emphasis on safety, reliability, sustainability, and innovation. Core Competencies Reliability & Customer Service Support: Troubleshoot and root cause analysis of vehicle equipment failures impacting service delivery and customer experience. Transit Systems Collaboration: Collaborate with maintenance staff, operations personnel, manufacturers, and senior engineering staff to support safe and reliable transit operations. System Issue Analysis & Resolution: Use engineering software tools, technical drawings, schematics, and diagnostic equipment to analyze and resolve system issues. Systems Engineering Fundamentals: Fundamental knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and electro‑mechanical systems. Effective Communication & Task Management: Prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a fast‑paced operational environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Mobility for Field Work: Adequate mobility to conduct field inspections and investigations. Examples of Duties Assist with a variety of vehicle engineering duties in support of design, repair, overhaul, evaluation, reliability, and maintenance of District rail transit vehicles. Support creation and modification of engineering specifications, drawings, and calculations/analyses; gather data to assist in engineering decisions. Assist in conducting field inspections and investigations into equipment failures; participate in recommendations for corrective actions or equipment design changes. Assist in designing and specifying special testing and servicing equipment to troubleshoot and maintain vehicle subsystems. Assist in designing computer hardware and software modifications; analyze and resolve computer, electrical, or mechanical system malfunctions. Provide technical information (specifications, drawings, testing results, evaluations) to journey‑level engineering staff in support of transit vehicle repair, engineering, and design. Assist in preparing engineering designs, specification costs, and quantity estimates for engineering construction projects. Conduct special studies and prepare a variety of reports and correspondence. Gather data and information to assist in development of quality assurance criteria and inspection procedures; may assist with related audits for compliance. Operate a variety of mechanical and electrical test and measurement equipment in a safe and effective manner. Minimum Qualifications Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Substitution: Professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year‑for‑year basis. Other Requirements: Must possess sufficient mobility to perform field inspections and investigations. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of: Basic principles and practices of electrical or mechanical engineering. Appropriate sources of engineering information. Material costs. Computer applications as applied to the solution of engineering problems. Engineering materials, equipment, and methods. Skill in: Applying basic engineering principles and practices to the solution of engineering problems. Conducting engineering studies and evaluations and writing clear and concise reports. Analyzing technical problems, including those involving mechanical, electrical, and software systems. Learning department procedures and applicable laws, codes, and regulations. Interpreting and preparing drawings, schematics, and specifications. Analyzing drawings and identifying assets. Keeping accurate records. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
