Facility Overview

• Department: Emergency Room

• Beds: 14 treatment rooms
• Trauma/Resuscitation Room: 1
• Patient Volume: Approximately 40–50 patients/day
• Patient Population: Pediatrics through geriatrics
• Disposition: Stabilize and transfer STEMI, stroke, trauma, and patients requiring admission

• RN Ratio: 1:4
• Charge Nurse: 24/7, no patient assignment
• Physician Coverage: 1 MD onsite 24/7
• Mid-Level Provider: 12:00 PM–10:00 PM
• Support Staff:
  • CNA 24/7
  • Unit Clerk 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy 24/7
  • Security 24/7
  • House Supervisor available by phone

Department Workflow

• No Fast Track
• Separate triage area available during high volume
• Patients usually roomed immediately; bedside RN completes triage
• ER holds are intermixed with ER patients
• Dedicated safe room for psychiatric patients

Monitoring & Diagnostics

• RNs interpret telemetry strips
• SpaceLabs monitors
• Imaging available:
  • X-Ray
  • CT
  • MRI
  • Ultrasound
  • PVL
• Imaging staff usually transport patients
• Labs drawn by both RNs and phlebotomy

Respiratory Services

• RT available 24/7
• Performs:
  • ABGs
  • Nebulizers
  • EKGs
• Manages ventilators and respiratory equipment

Scheduling

12-hour shifts

• 7:30 AM–8:00 PM
• 10:00 AM–10:30 PM
• 1:00 PM–1:30 AM
• 7:30 PM–8:00 AM

Additional scheduling details:

• Schedules built 6 weeks at a time
• Modified self-scheduling
• Travelers initially fill schedule gaps
• Night shifts generally grouped together when possible

• Holidays: Rotation based on department needs
• Call: None
• Floating: None
• Scrubs: Any professional, clean color

Orientation

• General hospital orientation
• 1 additional ER-specific shift (8–12 hours)
