The Estes Park Learning Place

Position Title: Tutor 

Compensation: $30 per contact hour Part-time positions with no guarantee of hours

Qualifications: Master’s Degree and 2 years of tutoring/teaching experience or Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of tutoring/teaching experience. Also shall demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the areas in which they seek to support student achievement. Experience working directly with the age of student they wish to tutor is necessary.

Role: Tutors work regularly and directly with students in support of their individual goals. They are directly responsible for the relationship EPLP develops and for student achievement. Tutors may conduct one-to-one or small group sessions depending on the needs of the students. As such they are expected to do the following:

General Responsibilities

1. Promote the Learning Place in the community and assist in student outreach.

2. Represent the Learning Place and our mission in a professional manner at all times.

3. Adhere to all the Board established Policies and Procedures.

4. Promptly respond to email and phone messages from staff and students.

5. Let Executive Director know of any periods of time when you have scheduled to be out of

town and will be unavailable.

6. Always be alert to student safety.

7. “Jump in” when needed to provide a smooth experience for our students and potential

students while at EPLP between students. This might occasionally include:

1. Greeting or acknowledging an individual in the lobby

2. Provide student enrollment packet to student/parents

3. Answer general questions when possible and directing them to the Executive

Director (financial) or ExecutiveDirector (scheduling/program) for more information 

4. Referring them to our Conexion- Programa Espanol for assistance in Spanish

5. Accept Student payments if the office is open and others are occupied.

6. Relay messages and paperwork to other staff members using established

procedures.

Student Appointments/ Scheduling

1. Manage student appointments by maintaining tutoring calendar in Keep & Share (or other system as established)
2. Email/ text reminders to each student /parent the day/evening before scheduled appointment.
3. Communicate any changes/cancellations with the Executive Director as per procedures.
4. Document late-cancels/no-shows per procedures established by Executive Director.
5. Accurately maintain tutor time sheet per established procedures.

Professional Responsibilities

1. Maintain an orderly, well organized learning environment with minimal distractions for the student.
2. Prepare lesson plans and review subject content as needed to in advance to prepare for tutoring session
3. Use the educational approach that is best suited for the student, modifying the approach and or schedule when indicated as the student progresses.
4. Identify and implement strategies to build student’s self-confidence and self-esteem.
5. Regularly communicate with parents and teachers on student’s progress and concerns.
6. Communicate students’ progress and issues of concern to the Executive Director.
7. Participate in the initial meeting with student/parent(s) to:

1. Explain EPLP and discuss needs, goals, and objectives

2. Agree on a tutoring schedule

3. Complete the Goals & Objectives for Tutoring with students, Parent(s), and Program

Director.

4. At the end of the semester, or more frequently as desired, complete the students

evaluation form with the student/ parent(s) and Executive Director.

Compensation

1. Tutors are paid for student contact hours only, not for preparation hours.

2. Participation in the monthly staff meetings and the Annual Teacher Appreciation event are

paid contact hours and are strongly recommended.

3. Participation in fundraisers or events, like the wine dinner are appreciated, voluntary hours and are not paid.

4. Every effort is made by the Executive Director to place students with the tutors who are best

suited to the individual and professional strengths of the tutor. This is also an effort to

minimize preparation time.

5. For tutor to be paid for late-cancel/ no-show appointments per Policy, they must be at EPLP

supporting other efforts in the organization as identified by the Executive Director.
