Vehicle Mechanic

The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled/mechanical work functions associated with repair and maintenance of diesel, automotive and mechanical equipment.

Duties

Assists in diagnosing, maintaining, and performing general mechanical repair work on light and heavy equipment, vehicles, and other machinery. Performs general mechanical repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance work, such as dismantling, overhauling, repairing and reassembling engines, removing/replacing transmissions, servicing automatic transmissions, etc.; performs light welding and fabrication as needed. Inspects, tests and repairs engine components and systems, such as ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic brake systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, emission systems, air conditioning systems, etc. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, such as pumping fuel into vehicles, checking/replacing fluid levels, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, rotating tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, performing basic body repair, repairing bus fare boxes and destination signage, etc. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing vehicles and equipment including a service truck, bus, dump truck, tractor, forklift, sweeper, trailer, bulldozer, backhoe, end loader, fuel truck, generator, tire changer, computerized tire balancer, battery/charging system analyzer, transfer pump, air conditioner recovery/recycling machine, air wrench, air compressor, pressure washer, hydraulic jack, grease gun, tire hammer, welder, torch, metal grinder, skill saw, table saw, drill press, gauges, mechanic tools, volt ohmmeter, diagnostic instruments, etc. Tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; reports problem situations. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain tools and equipment in operable condition; reports faulty equipment for repair. Assists in maintaining inventory of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; receives incoming parts; initiates requests for new or replacement materials. Makes emergency service calls for disabled vehicles at job sites or on the road. Performs general cleaning/housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining vehicles, equipment, and shop areas. Receives various forms, reports, work orders, invoices, diagrams, manuals, or other documentation; prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, and other documents; reviews, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Maintains records of repair work, fuel usage, odometer readings, and other service activities. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; responds to routine requests for information or assistance from employees, the public or other individuals. Additional functions include obtaining and/or transporting parts/supplies as needed and providing assistance to other employees or departments as needed. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by Vocational/Technical training in mechanics; additionally, one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving automotive/mechanical repair and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must obtain and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
