Respiratory Therapist (RRT), Adults, FT 36 hours - Nights Chicago, IL, United States Job Description $20,000 Sign On Bonus, New Market Rates and Tuition Reimbursement Respiratory Therapist, RRT Full‑Time Nights We're hiring a Respiratory Therapist (RRT) for the Respiratory Care Services department for a Full‑Time, Night shift at the University of Chicago Medicine main campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. Note: Our open positions will be supporting the adult patient populations. We also have student opportunities available for individuals currently enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program. Job Summary The (RRT) Registered Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under the direct supervision of department leadership and physician for the pediatric department. Provides patient assessment to determine cardiopulmonary status, implements appropriate patient care protocols, and maintains/improves cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status. Initiates and maintains emergent and non‑emergent non‑invasive ventilation and invasive mechanical ventilation per department policies and protocols. Essential Job Functions Administers supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy as prescribed by direct physician order or via established approved departmental patient‑care protocols; documents procedures appropriately and accurately into the EPIC electronic medical record. Administers intermittent (small‑volume nebulizer, MDI, etc.) or continuous medication delivery therapy (bronchodilators, steroid therapy, mucolytics, etc.) as prescribed or via established accepted department protocols; documents procedures into the EPIC electronic medical record accurately and in real‑time. Administers bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures; implements airway clearance techniques (chest physiotherapy, coughing/deep breathing techniques, therapy vest, flutter valve, ExPap device, Acapella device, and incentive spirometry) per physician order or under guidelines of departmental patient‑care protocols; documents procedures in EPIC electronic medical record accurately and timely. Initiates and maintains non‑invasive ventilation procedures (BIPAP, CPAP, high‑flow cannula) on an emergent and non‑emergent basis; assesses patient status and equipment; adjusts for patient comfort and therapy benefit; documents procedures in EPIC system. Initiates, maintains, and checks status of mechanical ventilation per department policy; provides thorough patient assessment to recommend and implement weaning plans per physician order or under pre‑approved departmental ventilator protocols; documents procedures accurately and timely in EPIC electronic medical record. Provides ventilator management (NIV and mechanical ventilation); appropriately monitors and reports hemodynamic parameters (ventilator weaning parameters, spontaneous breathing trials, etc.); documents information accurately and timely in EPIC electronic medical record. Performs arterial blood gas analysis per hospital, department and accrediting agency guidelines and standards of practice; troubleshoots ABG analyzers; performs quality control and calibration procedures; reports results accurately and timely within turnaround reporting guidelines. Provides patient transport within the facility when patients are moved to other areas on oxygen delivery systems, mechanical ventilators, etc. Required Qualifications Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (at least two years in duration) Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate’s Degree from an accredited academic body Demonstrates effective and accurate communication and documentation skills (both verbal and written) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner Basic Life Support Healthcare provider certification (American Heart Association) Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification; PALS Certification; or ACLS Certification preferred depending on patient care area assigned and primary patient populations served Job Type and Schedule Job Type/FTE: Full Time (0.9 FTE) Shift: Night (6:30pm-7:00am) Unit/Department: Respiratory Care Services (Adult) CBA Code: Non‑Union Must comply with UCMC’s COVID‑19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment; proof of vaccination required.
