The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for implementing clients’ Individualized Strategies under the direction of a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional. The DSP documents daily service—including recreation, leisure, and activities of daily living—ensures client rights, dignity, and privacy, and maintains a clean and safe environment. The DSP may work with clients exhibiting maladaptive behaviors such as verbal or physical aggression, self‑injurious behavior, property destruction, and elopement, as well as those requiring intensive care (e.g., toileting, bathing, special diets, enteral feeding). The DSP is assigned to a primary location but must be able to work across sites as needed. Essential Job Responsibilities Maintain a team approach with clients, staff, and outside agencies. Implement assigned programs from Individual Plans or Implementation Strategies, and document per procedures. Follow all agency and program rules and regulations, reporting concerns to supervisor promptly. Plan and prepare meals according to dietician‑written menus, ensuring client diet requirements are met. Attend to self‑care needs: toileting assistance, changing soiled garments, bathing, grooming, shaving, cleaning glasses, and adaptive equipment. Obtain and maintain medication administration authorization, completing required annual training and minimizing medication errors. Ensure safe conditions inside and outside the home, including maintenance, housekeeping, safety drills, and environmental safety reporting. Maintain a clean, sanitary environment in all assigned buildings and vehicles daily. Respond to emergencies in accordance with program and agency policies. Provide transportation for clients in personal or agency vehicles for work, shopping, appointments, social events, etc. Monitor client medical conditions and relay information to medical appointments. Adequately attend all meetings, shifts, and training sessions as scheduled. Assist in orientation and training of new staff. Participate in planning and implementation of community and in‑house activities. Conduct monthly client input meetings and facilitate Home and Community Based Settings Rules training activities, documenting participation. Take verbal and written directions and complete responsibilities with minimal supervision. Provide independent building coverage, including safety and supervision of clients, as needed. Work scheduled hours at various locations as determined by client and program needs. Complete required training on or before due dates to meet licensing and program requirements. Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality per program guidelines. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned by the supervisor. Maintain documentation required for licensing and program purposes. Demonstrate understanding of Home and Community Based Settings Rules and apply principles to interactions with clients, families, and stakeholders. Physical Requirements Climb stairs daily. Push, pull, reach, stoop/bend over, and use a step stool daily. Perform daily housekeeping tasks and assist clients in independent living skills. Physically assist clients in getting in and out of a van, bathtub, shower, or bed regularly. Implement behavior support strategies and respond to emergency behavioral issues. Require significant walking and standing on a daily basis. Must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds to assist in two‑person lift or with adaptive equipment. Equipment and Tools Computer and software: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, Zoom, SharePoint. Household appliances: stove, microwave, washer/dryer, dishwasher, countertop appliances. Alarm systems for monitoring fire, weather, security. Telephone and voicemail. Office equipment: printer/scanner, copy machine, calculator, shredder. Adaptive equipment: Hoyer lift, accessories, shower chairs or benches, walkers, wheelchairs. Agency vehicles with or without wheelchair lifts. Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license and meet IDOT approved driver status. Must have a personal automobile with minimum liability insurance and personal cell phone for secure messaging. Additional Training Requirements Must complete DSP and medication administration training: CPR, First Aid, Infection Control, OIG Rule 50, CPI. Must maintain medication administration authority by following all policies and procedures. Must complete additional on‑the‑job certification for enteral nutrition tasks (feeding, medication administration, pump operation, flushing, dressing care) at least twice per month. Work Schedules and Hours Evening, weekend, overnight, and holiday hours required. Schedules are determined by client and program needs and may change. Attendance and punctuality are essential. Driver and Transportation Policies Must transport clients in a personal automobile when necessary and maintain personal cell phone for secure communication. Must meet IDOT approved driver status and maintain valid Illinois driver’s license.
