Police Officer
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police, Police Officers are responsible for providing professional, ethical, and impartial law enforcement services to the Grafton community. Officers respond to calls for service from the public and work to identify potential problems, taking appropriate action to address them. Additionally, they are required to effectively and efficiently handle any administrative tasks assigned by the Chief of Police Lateral transfer applicants will be eligible to complete an accelerated field training program. It will not be released to unauthorized persons. All applicants, including lateral eligible applicants, shall complete each step of the examination process to be considered for employment. The examination and hiring process will consist of the following as outlined in Section 4.03 of the Grafton Police and Fire Commission Rules of Procedure: Strong preference will be given to lateral transfers and veterans. As of January 1, 2026, the annual starting salary for PO 1 is $75,102. Lateral consideration will be given to those who are currently serving as police officers and who have more than two years of experience. Applicants with 2 - 4.99 years of experience may be eligible to start at PO 2 ($82,111.52). Applicants with five or more years of experience may be eligible to begin at PO 3 ($87,118.32).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position operates under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant and may report directly to the Assistant Chief of Police or the Chief of Police. When needed, a Police Officer may also report to another Police Officer who serves as the shift supervisor (Officer in Charge) in the absence of a Police Sergeant. The individual may have direct authority over officers during their shift if designated as a shift supervisor (Officer in Charge) or assigned to lead a special task by the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, or a Sergeant. They also possess indirect authority over police volunteers, interns, or civilian personnel regarding matters that impact the safety of the officers. The following list of essential functions is meant to represent the tasks typically associated with this classification. However, it does not describe every specific position within the class. The absence of an essential function does not prevent management from assigning additional duties that are reasonably related to the position. Marginal Duties and Responsibilities - Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities. - Maintains contact with the general public, court officials, and other village officials when performing police operations. - Serves as a member of various employee committees.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Entry Level 1. Be a United States citizen; 2. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment; 3. Be of good moral character; 4. Be able to read and write the English language understandably; 5. Possess a Wisconsin high school diploma or a diploma issued by an out-of-state high school accredited by an appropriate agency of the state or shall have passed the general education development (GED) diploma test or any other test recommended by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as indicating high school diploma level; 6. Must have completed at least 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, hold an Associate Degree from an accredited institution, or demonstrate the ability to complete one of these requirements within five (5) years from the hire date. 7. Have not been convicted of any federal felony or of any offense that, if committed in Wisconsin, could be punished as a felony unless the applicant has been granted an absolute and unconditional pardon; 8. Have no Domestic Abuse-related convictions. Applicants must be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the performance of duties as a Law Enforcement Officer. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the village of Grafton and the department. - Knowledge of Constitutional rights, Wisconsin Statutes, Grafton Code of Ordinances, and Wisconsin Traffic Code. - Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices and techniques of patrol, investigation, surveillance, court procedures, community relations, weapon use, traffic control, report preparation, and custody of persons and property. - Knowledge of the criminal justice system. - Knowledge of and ability to apply appropriate self-defense techniques. - Knowledge of the boundaries, streets, neighborhoods, and business areas of the village of Grafton. - Skill in the proper use of standard law enforcement equipment including weaponry, communications equipment, surveillance equipment, safety equipment, and laser and radar guns. - Ability to apply departmental policies and procedures to police duties. - Ability to comprehend and apply ordinances, statutes, laws and higher court rulings applicable to law enforcement activities and responsibilities. - Ability to apply police science skills and techniques to assigned duties in patrol, traffic, investigation or laboratory activities. - Ability to testify in court. - Ability to physically protect oneself and others in threatening situations, and the ability to subdue and control individuals as required. - Ability to prepare accurate and concise reports and records that may be used as evidence in courts of law. - Ability to learn photography and forensic skills if assigned to investigations. - Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computers, and job-related computer applications, including electronic mail. - Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with various audiences. - Ability to research, develop, and lead formal and informal presentations and discussions with diverse groups. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with Village employees, supervisors, the general public, other jurisdictions, and court officials. - Ability to enforce ordinances, statutes, and laws fairly, firmly, and impartially. Note: Entry and lateral Police Officer new hires are expected to meet all knowledge, skills and abilities upon completion of training. Special Requirements - Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Wisconsin Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state; - Ability to pass a drug screen, polygraph, psychological and physical examination and background check. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 with normal color vision and must be able to pass a hearing test; - Basic Law Enforcement Training (or Police Officer Standards and Training) certification or equivalent; - Ability to work various shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends; - Successful completion of the Village of Grafton Police Department hiring process.
