Employment Type: Full-time, Morning and Evening shifts. Job Summary Under the direction of the Psychiatry Department Chair and the Ambulatory Adult Division Chief, the Psychiatrist provides psychiatric assessment and management of patients with co‑morbid medical disease and mental illness. The incumbent provides initial psychiatric consultations, ongoing medication management in the outpatient settings, and direct patient care to medically ill patients in the Ambulatory Outpatient Clinic. Typical Duties Provide general psychiatric assessment to referred patients in the Ambulatory Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic. Provide ongoing medication management to these patients. Provide direct patient care to medically ill patients in the Ambulatory Outpatient Clinic to ensure safety, evaluate need for further hospitalization, and provide appropriate pharmacotherapy. Provide education to patients, students, medical residents, and clinic staff regarding mental health screening and treatment within a medical practice. Document all encounters with patients in the medical record and communicate diagnoses and treatment recommendations to appropriate medical staff. Report any cases of abuse or neglect in accordance with State of Illinois law and Cook County Health policies. Refer patients to appropriate psychiatric, medical, and social services. Maintain active licensure with the State of Illinois, active credentials with Cook County Health, and active board certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Engage in ongoing provider performance evaluation within the Department. Attend required meetings, participate in assigned committees, and complete routine duties and on‑call duties assigned. Participate in necessary peer review and quality assurance activities. Provide coverage for other psychiatrists in different settings within the system, primarily in the Stroger inpatient and emergency settings, as needed. Minimum Qualifications Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited college, university, or foreign equivalent. Completion of an accredited General Psychiatry Residency Program. Active Illinois and federal controlled substance license. Active Illinois physician and surgeon license. Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Meet requirements for staff privileges granted by the Executive Medical Staff of John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience with Medication Assisted Treatment. Prior experience in Telepsychiatry. Bilingual. Certification in addiction medicine. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics Specific knowledge and/or experience with gender, age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, SES, substance abuse, and medical issues of the treatment population served. Knowledge of all applicable departmental, Cook County, state, and federal regulations regarding patient care. Skills in teaching and supervising psychology trainees in psychiatric assessment, psychotherapeutic methods, and psychological testing. Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills. Strong organizational skills to manage large volume of patients and referrals. Ability to assess information, apply critical thinking to determine course of action, and relay this information to patients, families, and clinical staff. Ability to provide clear and concise documentation and maintain confidentiality. Ability to maintain professional boundaries with all staff, trainees, and patients at all times. Physical capability to perform required movements, vision, hearing, and speech functions. Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage time. Willingness to provide psychiatric consultation and care to all Cook County Health & Hospitals System sites, including Stroger Hospital, Oak Forest Hospital, and Provident Hospital campuses. Willingness and ability to provide brief periods of coverage for other psychiatrists in different settings within the system, primarily in Stroger inpatient and emergency settings. Physical and Environmental Demands Position functions within a healthcare environment. Incumbent must adhere to all hospital and department‑specific safety requirements, including personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, engineering controls, and other safety precautions as specified by hospital‑wide policy. Veteran Preference Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces for a minimum of six months of continuous service.
