Qualifications Education and Experience : Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school. Applicants for this class must: Complete a background clearance application, release all records involving any criminal history, and complete a fingerprint‑based and name‑based criminal history records check. Never have been convicted or found not guilty by reason of insanity in a civilian or military jurisdiction of any permanent disqualifying criminal offense listed in section 1572.103(a) of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) – Title 49. Never have been convicted or found not guilty by reason of insanity in a civilian or military jurisdiction within the 7 years preceding the date of application of any interim disqualifying criminal offense listed in section 1572.103(b) of the CFR – Title 49. Not have been released from incarceration within the 5 years preceding the date of application for any interim disqualifying criminal offense listed in section 1572.103(b) of the CFR – Title 49. Not be under want or warrant for a felony listed in section 1572.103(a) or section 1572.103(b) of the CFR – Title 49. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license or be able to obtain one prior to appointment. Overview An employee in this class performs driver's license examination work of average difficulty, including determining applicant eligibility for services such as license renewal, replacement, testing, and handgun permits; administering vision, written, and road skills tests; and collecting and processing application data and fees. This classification does not supervise other employees. Responsibilities Explain state laws, licensing requirements, and Department of Safety and Homeland Security rules and regulations to the public. Answer questions about office hours, location, fees, and application process. Collect appropriate fees and identifying documents (social security card, proof of residence, current driver’s license, USDOT medical card); verify their legitimacy. Access applicant test files and approve applicants for appropriate testing procedures. Count and record cash‑on‑hand at the beginning and end of shifts, print daily receipt reports, identify discrepancies, calculate daily office revenue, reconcile reports, and prepare/execute bank deposits. Instruct applicants on completing forms and test procedures; administer vision screenings, written tests, and road skills tests for Tennessee driver’s license applicants; photograph applicants with a digitized camera; advise applicants of results and the steps required to retake tests if needed; record results in the computer database. Inspect motor vehicle functioning (lights, brakes, turn signals, etc.) and determine if the vehicle is safe to operate. Assess adherence to road safety rules by observing applicant maneuvers. Update operational records or licensing information and enter biographical data into the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST). Compare applicant data with written application for accuracy; review information with applicant to ensure correctness. Handle complex projects, address customer inquiries, process immigration cases and accommodations for applicants who need special assistance; assist with audits, reports, ordering equipment or supplies.
