HVAC Technician

Duties

1. Diagnose, locate and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large, complex heating, ventilation; air conditioning, and refrigeration systems (HVAC).
2. Test for refrigerant leaks and uses a refrigerant recovery/ recycling station, to Environmental Protection Agency standards to safely reclaim, recycle and store the refrigerant before repairs can be made.
3. Repair HVAC systems and components in structures such as, warehouses, hangars, hospitals, large office buildings and complexes.
4. Conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment, and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure.

• By law, all persons with access to a system or container that stores refrigerant, including A/C coolant such as R-22 or R-410A, must have Universal Certification received from an EPA approved certifying program.
• You must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade.
• You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final SECRET security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
• You must be able to become certified in Confined Space Safety, Backflow Prevention, and Refrigerant Recovery.

Qualifications

This position has a Selective Placement Factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The Selective Placement Factor is: Mechanic must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade. You must submit a copy of your certification with your application to be considered for this position. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Planning work schedules and sequence of operations for the work force supervised; 2) Setting in-shop priorities and determines the number and type of personnel required to accomplish job assignments; 3) Assigning work to subordinates either orally, by providing written instructions, or electronically through the Computerized Facilities Management System; 4) Training subordinates in safety regulations and other regulations and policies established by the Federal Government; 5) Inspecting work in progress to ensure productivity, efficiency, economy and safety of operations; 6) Giving detailed supervision and resolves working problems as required; 7) Furnishing information regarding such matters as on-the-job injuries, accidents, and CPR and respirator certification records; 8) Enforcing safety, fire, and other regulations, and sees that good housekeeping is maintained in work areas supervised; 9) Obtaining, issuing, and advising on the use of safety equipment; 10) Keeping supervisor informed concerning job progress, technical and personal problems encountered or unsafe conditions not within his/her own ability to correct; 11) Attending meetings concerning requirements, specifications and technical matters relating to assigned work; 12) Recommending new methods, material or equipment for expediting and improving work execution.
