School Counselor Education Specialist
Reports To: Director of School Counseling
Department: Department of Student Services
FLSA Status: Exempt
Terms of Employment 12-months (240 days) 7.5 hours per day usually Monday through Friday. Daily work schedule will be determined by the supervisor or his/her designee. Work assignments and schedules are subject to change.
Annual Compensation: $81,044.00-$106,802.00 (Schedule: CS)
To provide leadership, coordination, and support in the implementation of a comprehensive guidance and counseling program that promotes academic achievement, personal/social development, and college and career readiness for all students. The Guidance and School Counseling Education Specialist will also lead district efforts in school scheduling, CCR credentialing, and early college opportunities in partnership with colleges and universities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current Alabama Teacher's Certification in School Counseling.
- Master's Degree or higher with an endorsement in administration.
- Minimum of five years of successful experience as a school counselor, preferably with experience across elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as central office experience.
- Extensive knowledge of the Alabama Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Plan, including its goals, objectives, activities, delivery methods, and accountability structures to Montgomery Public Schools' mission, vision, and core values.
- Experience leading, developing, or supporting comprehensive school counseling programs aligned to the ASCA National Model
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with program compliance, documentation systems, and maintaining structured counseling program records.
- Experience providing coaching, monitoring, or professional support to school counselors or student support staff.
- Strong organizational, communication, and program management skills with the ability to support multiple schools
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model, ensuring services address students' academic, career, and social-emotional development.
- Provides strategic oversight and supervision the school counseling program, ensuring effective design, implementation, and monitoring of tiered academic, behavioral, and attendance interventions across schools.
- Supports schools in improving targeted student support services with instructional priorities, intervention frameworks, and enrichment opportunities.
- Develops and manages a centralized tracking system to monitor FAFSA completion, CCR credential attainment, and dual enrollment participation, ensuring accurate, real-time data reporting across all schools.
- Uses tracking system data to identify students at risk of not meeting FAFSA or CCR requirements and coordinates timely interventions with school counselors and administrators to improve completion outcomes.
- Uses data from student information systems, assessments, early warning indicators, and statewide testing results to drive decision-making, identify trends, and implement responsive strategies that improve student outcomes.
- Coordinates and supports statewide testing efforts by collaborating with testing coordinators and school leaders to ensure proper test administration, student readiness, accommodations compliance, and alignment of support strategies to improve performance outcomes.
- Supervises and supports school counselors and student support personnel through coaching, feedback, and professional learning aligned with best practices in counseling, trauma-informed care, and social-emotional learning.
- Designs and delivers professional development for counselors, teachers, and school leaders focused on effective implementation of the ASCA Model, data utilization, and student-centered support strategies.
- Strengthens partnerships with families by promoting meaningful engagement, providing resources, and supporting schools in building effective communication systems that empower families to support student success.
- Collaborates with community agencies, higher education institutions, and local organizations to expand access to wraparound services, mental health supports, and enrichment opportunities for students and families.
- Coordinates outreach efforts that connect families to critical resources, including academic supports, attendance interventions, college and career planning, and social services.
- Ensures the implementation of trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning to foster safe, supportive, and inclusive school environments for students and families.
- Monitors and ensures compliance with Section 504, attendance laws, behavior intervention frameworks, and statewide testing policies while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Collaborates with principals and district leadership to align student support services with school improvement goals and district priorities, particularly in diverse and urban school settings.
- Manages multiple programs and initiatives with robust organizational and project management practices, ensuring effective implementation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, with responsibilities subject to change at any time to meet district needs in accordance with applicable policies and laws.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- 100% of schools submitting an approved ASCA-aligned annual comprehensive counseling plan by the district deadline.
- 100% of school counselors maintaining a complete and updated counseling program notebook (services, interventions, data, and documentation).
- 90% of counselors implementing services as outlined in the approved counseling plan (direct services, indirect services, services to support student academic, career, and social/emotional development).
- 100% of schools receive quarterly CCR performance reports with documented review and action steps completed by leadership teams.
- 90 % of schools receiving and meeting fidelity standards based on program audits and monitoring visits.
- 100% of schools and school counselors in full compliance with state requirements related to counseling services, documentation, student support services, and reporting mandates.
Employee performance shall be evaluated annually by the Director of School Counseling or a designee in accordance with applicable Montgomery Public Schools Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, and established evaluation protocols.
