Job Title: Maintenance Technician
Job Description
The Maintenance Technician maintains packing and seaming equipment in reliable operating condition to support production goals. This role sets up, tests, and adjusts machines before each shift, performs timely repairs and preventive maintenance, and ensures all required documentation is accurate and complete. The technician works closely with production teams to minimize downtime, uphold food safety and quality standards, and strictly follow all safety procedures in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Set up and test all assigned packing equipment so it is ready for operation before each production shift.
Complete all pre-startup inspections and paperwork for packers and seamers and file documentation as scheduled.
Conduct periodic inspections of assigned packers, belts, and conveyors throughout the shift to ensure proper operation.
Attend equipment breakdowns promptly, diagnose issues, complete repair work efficiently, and record all work in logbooks and maintenance systems.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks on packing and seaming equipment and ensure all related paperwork and system records are completed and filed correctly.
Clear equipment jams safely and promptly, and verify machine performance after clearing jams.
Inspect packers and surrounding areas after setup and testing to ensure no tools, hardware, parts, rags, lubricants, or other foreign objects remain that could pose a risk to product safety.
Conduct hourly random visual inspections of cans from each operating seamer and verify results with the tear down technician when rechecks or adjustments are needed.
Work closely with seamer operators to identify and address defects such as skidders, deadheads, cut overs, and other double seam irregularities.
Perform additional visual seam inspections immediately after can jams or after startup following prolonged shutdowns, and verify that operators complete required inspections.
Collect cans for seamer tear down at required intervals (e.g., every three hours for water packs and every two hours for oil packs) and deliver them to the tear down laboratory on time.
Request removal of product from the immediate work area when maintenance must be performed during production to maintain food safety.
Maintain a strong presence in the packing room to minimize response time when maintenance support is needed.
Respond to breakdowns safely and efficiently, ensuring repairs are completed in the least amount of time possible while maintaining quality and safety.
Inspect any completed welding work for metal burrs, sharp edges, or protrusions that could pose risks to people, containers, or food safety, and correct issues as needed.
Notify the team leader or designated person at the end of any maintenance job so machines can be cleaned and sanitized if necessary.
Create a work entry in the Maintenance Connection system for every job completed, regardless of duration or resources used.
Document in Maintenance Connection the details of each problem, actual repair time, actions taken, failure reasons, and any parts used.
Maintain accurate daily remarks, corrective actions, and job records for seamers in the appropriate logs and systems.
Keep the seamer shop, workshop, and workstation areas, including service carts and tables, clean, organized, and free of unnecessary items.
Clean drilling and cutting machines after use and ensure all tools, lubricants, rags, parts, and materials are properly stored in their assigned locations.
Ensure food-grade and non-food-grade lubricants are stored properly and kept on separate shelves.
Take ownership of company tools and equipment, keeping them clean, secure, and in good working condition.
Support the packing room production team in achieving shift productivity and quality goals by stepping in to assist when needed.
Identify hazardous situations and report them immediately to a supervisor.
Escalate all concerns and problems to the supervisor or manager without delay.
Perform any other tasks assigned or directed by supervisors or managers while complying with company policies, procedures, food safety, quality, GMP, and safety requirements.
Never place hands inside moving equipment and consistently follow all lockout/tagout and safety protocols.
Participate in required safety and technical training programs, applying learned procedures in daily work.
