Townsen Memorial Hospital is looking for a Full-Time Registered Nurse, Medical Surgical Inpatient Unit, to join our team at our Houston, TX location (77072). Summary : The Registered Nurse, Medical Surgical Inpatient Unit is responsible for admitting the patient to the clinical area and providing nursing care to medical and post-operative patients, as well as assisting with the development of a nursing care plan designed for the individual patient. Staffing is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties outside their normal scope as staffing and patient needs change. Responsibilities Ensure the pre-operative, post-operative, observation/inpatient area has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients; give instructions to patients as directed by the physician or physician assistant Ensure supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order Assist with the admission of the patient to the unit and prepare them for the scheduled procedure Make initial assessment and determine the patient’s nursing needs; communicate additional discharge needs when applicable (transportation, durable medical equipment) Explain nursing procedures and actions to help reduce anxiety Identify patient’s physical and mental status Monitor the patient’s medical condition and report significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist Ensure surgical consent, pre-operative test results, and History and Physical are in the medical record prior to the procedure Make pre-op and post-op calls to patients Report important health history facts to the House Supervisor and/or physician Provide emotional support to patients and family members as necessary Document patient care accurately in the medical record; implement doctor’s orders in a timely and accurate manner Educate patients and family; develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, families, visitors, and Center staff Document concisely and accurately in all records as required by policy Understand and maintain clinical competencies (general, age-specific, and drug administration) Demonstrate clinical problem solving and critical thinking; plan for routine events and manage emergent situations Complete patient care responsibilities in a timely manner with accurate documentation Use downtime efficiently; assist and respond positively to requests from team members; adapt to unexpected changes Acclimate to various work schedules to achieve high quality of care Protect patient and family privacy and maintain confidentiality of records per policy, procedure, and HIPAA Follow safety rules, report accidents promptly, and address hazards; communicate hazards to peers and management Maintain Center/Departmental policies and procedures; adhere to company standards of conduct Perform other duties as assigned and collaborate with clinical staff to ensure care needs are met and orders are carried out accurately and timely Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of computer and relevant software applications Strong attention to detail and thoroughness Ability to maintain composure under pressure and manage difficult situations Ability to follow, plan, implement nursing interventions, and evaluate patient condition Compliance with facility policies and continuing education programs Practice within the Texas Nurse Practice Act and accept accountability for own actions Effective communication skills for collaborative nursing Ability to respond quickly to changes in priorities or patient conditions High stress tolerance and adaptability to change Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain organized systems for patient flow Ability to clean, maintain, and make minor adjustments to equipment Excellent patient interaction and professional communication skills Strong customer service and phone etiquette Proficiency in Microsoft Office and EMR (Vision) usage Energetic and eager to learn and develop new skills Education and Experience Associate’s Degree in Nursing or related field Registered Nurse license in Texas (active and unencumbered) Current BLS, ACLS and PALS One (1) year of experience in a peri-operative and inpatient environment Townsen Memorial Hospital is an accredited network of facilities emphasizing emergency care, outpatient surgery, and diagnostics and imaging.
