Administrative Director - Nursing Services

Job Summary

The Administrative Director of Nursing Services provides leadership and oversight for all nursing departments and clinical services within the facility in which they have oversight. This includes, but is not limited to, Medical/Surgical Units, Emergency Department, Surgical Services, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and associated clinics. The Administrative Director is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care and related services, ensuring safe, high-quality, patient-centered outcomes. This role functions at the executive nursing leadership level for the facility, with accountability for establishing and maintaining standards of nursing practice, while operating under the administrative leadership structure of Shannon Health.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

Administrative

• Provides leadership and oversight for operational strategies across all nursing services including, but not limited to, Medical/Surgical Units, Emergency Department, Surgical Services, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and associated Clinics.
• Participates in strategic planning, organizational process implementation, and continuous improvement initiatives for clinical operations.
• Develops and sustains a “system of care” assuring smooth patient flow, optimal cost/quality outcomes, and seamless transitions across acute, ambulatory, and community settings.
• Ensures accurate financial and statistical reporting; develops and manages departmental budgets to meet performance objectives.
• Fosters collaborative efforts among physicians, providers, and leadership to ensure excellence in patient care and alignment with Shannon Health’s mission.
• Accountable for patient, provider, and employee satisfaction across nursing service lines.

Problem Solving

• Analyzes activities, costs, operations, and outcomes to monitor progress toward organizational and nursing objectives.
• Identifies problems affecting nursing and patient care, implements timely resolutions, and measures impact.
• Leads or participates in program development, evaluation, and implementation of new or expanded nursing services.

Communications

• Establishes effective working relationships and communicates clearly and professionally with senior management, physicians, nursing staff, and support teams.
• Serves as the primary nursing liaison with medical staff, ensuring alignment between nursing operations and provider expectations.

Personnel

• Communicates organizational and departmental goals to nursing leadership and staff.
• Provides oversight for recruitment, retention, orientation, and professional development of nursing staff.
• Evaluates performance, fosters leadership development of nurse managers, and ensures succession planning.
• Promotes a culture of accountability, engagement, and excellence in nursing practice.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory

• Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies (CIHQ, CMS, Joint Commission, state nursing boards) governing nursing and clinical operations.
• Evaluates performance data and develops action plans for clinical and operational improvements.
• Investigates patient care concerns and ensures timely resolution.
• Maintains knowledge of current nursing standards, evidence-based practices, and regulatory changes affecting service delivery.

Operations Management

• Collects and analyzes statistical and quality data to support decision-making.
• Develops and recommends annual budgets for nursing departments and ensures adherence.
• Oversees planning for space utilization, equipment acquisition, and capital needs to support nursing care.
• Leads participation of nursing in facility and system committees, representing clinical interests and performance metrics.
• Maintains departmental facilities and equipment to promote safe, efficient, and high-quality care.

Other Duties

• Performs other responsibilities as assigned by senior leadership.

Qualifications

Education

• Required
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current RN licensure

• Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field

Experience

• Preferred
  • 3-5 years of operations management experience

Certification/Licensure

• Required
  • Registered Nurse (RN), with Authorization to Practice in the State of Texas
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • Auto Liability Insurance
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
    • Required within ninety (90) days of start date
