Department: Family Birth Center Position Description: Registered Nurse (RN) Status: PRN - As Needed - Variable Hours and Days Shift: Day and Night - As Needed - Variable Shift Time Schedule: Day 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Night 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. - As Needed Salary Range: $38.02 - 48.48 Position Summary: The position is responsible for care for families antepartum to postpartum and newborn care. The RN will provide direct patient care in the Family Birth Center, including all aspects of care for the mother and neonate, and will assist with other duties such as secretarial and housekeeping as needed to keep the department running efficiently. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties represent a summary of major responsibilities. Staff may be required to perform additional duties specific to the position. Patient Care and Assessment: Assessment: Conduct initial and ongoing assessment of patients' physical, psychosocial, environmental, and self‑care needs. Care Planning: Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans based on assessments and multidisciplinary plans. Direct Patient Care: Provide nursing care, including medication administration, treatments, vitals monitoring, and assistance with activities of daily living. Patient Education: Assess learning needs and educate patients and families on health conditions, treatment plans, post‑discharge care, and preventative health maintenance. Discharge Planning: Establish goals and strategies for patient discharge, coordinating with other providers. Communication and Collaboration: Interdisciplinary Teamwork: Collaborate with physicians, therapists, social workers, and others to develop and revise care plans. Communication: Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the care team. Shift Reports: Provide organized and concise shift reports to ensure continuity of care. Documentation and Quality Improvement: Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely patient records, complying with regulations. Quality Assurance: Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance clinical protocols and outcomes. Adherence to Standards: Ensure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and measuring outcomes. Professional Development and Leadership: Professional Development: Continuously enhance knowledge and skills through education and professional activities. Mentorship and Supervision: Assist in orientation and mentorship of new staff and supervise other nursing personnel as required. Responsibilities: Attend and complete all required in‑services, mandatory meetings, and education. Maintain all licensure/certification requirements for the position. Meet all employee health requirements per OSHA, State, and local policies. Accept and perform Family Birth Center RN responsibilities following orientation and skills checklist completion. Accept other duties as assigned to promote organizational goals. Demonstrate skill proficiency, including updates to skills as necessary. Demonstrate critical thinking and prioritize care appropriately. Recognize, intervene, and communicate concerning or emergent assessments. Maintain competence with electronic fetal monitoring and sterile vaginal exams. Administer and manage high‑alert medications used in this setting. Basic Qualifications: Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience: Minimum 2 years in labor and delivery required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated leadership and verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Additional certifications preferred (e.g., CEN, CCRN, RNC‑OB, C‑EFM). Knowledge of nursing principles, ethics, and professional practice. Communication/Teamwork: Excellent communication and customer service skills. Works well within a team. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Mandatory Reporter status for adults and children within 3 months of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) course. Electronic Fetal Monitoring education, annual. Stabilization and Transport of the Neonate (STABLE) certification. Working Conditions: Clean, well‑lit, heated, and air‑conditioned area with exposure to unpleasant sights, smells, and infectious diseases. Work schedule includes variable 12‑hour shifts, with first shift 7 a.m.–7:30 p.m. and second shift 7 p.m.–7:30 a.m.; hours may vary. Vision must be correctable for computer screens and printed information. Hearing in normal range for telephone contacts and conversations.
