The Work You Will Do:
Senior Equipment Operator
This position will operate large equipment, perform maintenance and assist with repairs on equipment.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Mathematical calculations.
- Standard safety rules and procedures.
- Procedures, techniques, and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.
Skilled in:
- Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
- Operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles.
- Completing job related reports and forms.
- Communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to:
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment.
- Train others.
- Read and understand job related materials.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
- Stand for an extended period of time.
Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:
- A valid Class “A” CDL is required.
- Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
- Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must successfully obtain and maintain, training, certification, a satisfactorily criminal background check, and any additional requirements provided by the Department of Corrections in order to supervise inmates.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A valid Class “A” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required at time of hire.
This position requires a valid Class A driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
