CLINICAL DIRECTOR, WEST COAST

Reports to: Chief Clinical Officer
Location: California based, remote with regional travel (target 25 to 35 percent)
Status: Full time, exempt
Compensation: $225,000-$250,000 base, plus performance incentive and benefits
Licensure: Active California DENTIST license required at hire. Additional state licensure within the region obtained over the first several months, supported by the company.
Clinical time: One day per week in clinic

About the role

Enable Dental delivers mobile and portable dentistry to PACE programs, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across 27 markets and 13 states. The West Coast Clinical Director is the senior clinical leader for the region and the clinical seat at the table with our West Coast program partners.

This is a regional ownership role. You are the clinical line of authority for providers in the region, the clinical voice with payer and program leadership, and the person accountable for the quality and integrity of the care delivered under our contracts.

Scope

• Clinical supervision of West Coast providers across PACE, SNF, ALF, and IDD sites
• Primary clinical relationship owner for West Coast PACE and payer programs
• Regional peer to the operations leader for the same territory, reporting to the CCO
• Partners with the other Clinical Directors, Compliance, and the full Clinical Excellence team to keep standards, audit definitions, and provider expectations consistent across every region

Responsibilities

Provider leadership and development

• Serve as the clinical supervisor of record for dentists and hygienists in the region, holding the clinical reporting line and the standards that come with it
• Conduct in person onboarding and 30, 60, and 90 day check ins for new providers
• Coach the geriatric and special needs care model case by case: treatment planning, case presentation, palliative sequencing, prognosis judgment on medically complex and frail patients
• Own error report follow up, remediation planning, and retraining
• Participate in clinical screening and hiring of provider candidates for the region

Quality and chart audit

• Run routine chart auditing to a defined coverage standard per provider per quarter, in partnership with the Clinical Excellence team and the fractional audit consultant
• Conduct treatment plan audits and clinical review of the schedule
• Investigate clinical grievances to closure inside contractual and federally clocked response windows, and route findings into provider coaching
• Maintain provider scorecards on documentation quality, remake rate, and adherence to standards

Referral and specialty care management

• Review specialist referrals for clinical appropriateness and scope, redirecting to internal providers where clinically appropriate
• Upskill regional general dentists on surgical extractions and straightforward endodontics
• Design the clinical model for fractional internal endodontist and oral surgeon capacity, and manage single case agreements with external specialists

Contract and benefit adjudication

• Adjudicate frequency-limited, carve-out, and conditional services against each contract's benefit design at the chart level
• Secure prospective interdisciplinary team authorization for out-of-benefit cases before treatment, with a documented authorization trail
• Identify and sequence program-paid cases, including the implant and advanced prosthetic pipeline, for internal delivery
• Provide clinical redline input at contract renewal on frequency definitions, remake and warranty windows, and benefit language

Program partnership

• Represent Enable Dental clinically at quarterly joint operating committees, including preparation and follow through
• Deliver quarterly clinical summaries and reconciliations per program
• Provide clinical input to business development on new programs and market launches in the region

Standards and process

• Work with Compliance on licensure, credentialing, CE, state supervision rules, and site visit findings across every state in the region
• Contribute to the Clinical Policy Manual and to regional standard operating procedures, developed jointly with the other Clinical Directors so one region's practice does not diverge from the rest
• Feed audit results and provider performance into the Clinical Excellence dashboard

Clinical practice

• Treat patients one day per week in the field. This keeps licensure current, sustains credibility with the providers you lead, and gives you direct knowledge of the care model, the equipment, and the site conditions your team works in.

How performance is measured

• Chart audit coverage per provider per quarter
• Grievance response time and closure rate
• Provider 30, 60, and 90 day check in completion
• Referral turnaround and appropriateness review coverage
• External specialist spend per referral
• Adjudication and authorization volume against contract terms
• Provider retention and engagement
• Remake rate and documentation quality at provider level

Required qualifications

• DDS or DMD from an accredited program
• Active, unrestricted California dental license in good standing at hire. California is the only license required on day one.
• Willingness to obtain licensure in the additional states within the region over the first several months. The company covers application costs and provides time to complete the process, and Compliance manages the sequence with you.
• Five or more years of clinical practice, including general dentistry with removable prosthetics, extractions, and treatment planning for medically complex adults
• Direct supervisory experience with dentists and hygienists reporting to you
• Working fluency with electronic health records, and comfort using data and reports as a routine part of clinical decision making
• Willingness to travel regionally on a regular cadence

Ideal background

We expect the strongest candidates to come from one of the following, and we are equally interested in all three:

• DSO or group practice clinical leadership. Regional or multi site clinical director experience where dentists and hygienists reported to you directly, with accountability for quality, standards, and provider development across locations.
• FQHC or public health dentistry. Dental director experience in a federally qualified health center, community health center, or public health system, including work under government contracts, grant requirements, and reporting obligations.
• Military dental leadership. Command of a dental clinic or department, with responsibility for provider readiness, credentialing, standards enforcement, and quality assurance in a chain of command structure.

Additionally valued, in any combination:

• Mobile or portable dentistry experience, including treating patients outside a fixed operatory
• Teledentistry experience, whether synchronous or store and forward, including remote review and consultation workflows
• Experience with government and insurance contracts for dental care, including Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, PACE, managed care, or state program contracting
• Experience working for a dental insurance company or dental benefits administrator, particularly in utilization review, prior authorization, dental consultant, or dental director roles
• Familiarity with capitated and per member per month payment models, benefit design, and frequency limitations
• Geriatric, long term care, special needs, or hospital dentistry experience
• Quality assurance, peer review, or dental board complaint process experience
• Multi state licensure, particularly in the western region

What this role is not

This is not a production role with director duties attached. Chair time is capped at one day a week and is deliberate. The role is judged on regional clinical leadership, not chair production.
