Assistant Band Director

Assistant Band Director

Under general supervision, provides knowledge, motivation, and leadership in band activities in which the student can excel to his/her full potential while competing in an atmosphere that adds to his/her total education, including his/her physical well-being, moral character, and social and mental development. Assists with duties assigned to band staff in consultation with the band director. Reports to the assigned Principal and Band Director.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists with training participants in area assigned.
  • Assists in building and maintaining a successful and dynamic band program that provides for maximum student participation in a wide variety of activities that bring positive recognition to the music program, school, district and community.
  • Helps develop routines for halftime shows, school events, and public service appearances.
  • Helps develop and coordinate off-season activities (e.g., summer training clinics, etc.).
  • Assists with all before- and after-school band rehearsals and band events.
  • Supports instrumental music performances at practices, concerts, parades, competitions, and festivals.
  • Assists the band director in keeping facilities in proper order, with instrumental and equipment being properly used, maintained and stored.
  • Supervises students at all times from the time practice or activity begins until all students leave campus.
  • Monitors the physical condition of students constantly during physical activity; enforces safety rules and regulations.
  • Encourages academic excellence of students.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents; schedules and conducts conferences with parents and student athletes as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in designated subject area with a valid South Carolina Teaching Certificate preferred, supplemented by four to five years of experience at the high school and/or college level or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess and maintain high moral character and ability to work well with children.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours.
  • Valid driver's license

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of remaining standing for extended periods of time, demonstrating fitness/athletic activities, stooping, kneeling and crouching, and some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12 to 20 pounds).

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and communicate effectively to convey or exchange information, provide direction, facilitate meetings, and collaborate with stakeholders.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and interpret reports, policies, research, and professional literature. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, presentations, and professional learning materials using prescribed formats and appropriate grammar and style.

Requires the ability to speak before groups with poise, voice control, and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical and strategic thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in standard English, both orally and in writing.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to interpret and analyze student achievement data, professional learning metrics, and budgetary information.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment and presentation tools.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, perform under pressure, and respond effectively in high-accountability environments.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear, including communicating via telephone and virtual meeting platforms.

Performance Indicators:

Knowledge of Job: Is knowledgeable in the methods, policies and procedures of the Fairfield County School District. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information. Knows how to apply supervisory and managerial concepts and principles; has knowledge of administrative principles involved in developing, directing and supervising various programs and related activities. Knows how to plan, organize and direct a coaching and support staff. Has the ability to offer instruction and advice to subordinates regarding departmental policies, methods and regulations. Is able to perform employee evaluations and to make recommendations based on results. Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Has thorough knowledge of the principles and practices athletic programming; has knowledge of physical education theories and practices; has skill in the interpretation of subject matter to the intellectual level of students taught. Has the ability to demonstrate physical fitness activities, movements, strategies, etc., as necessary. Has knowledge of the characteristics of the age groups assigned. Is able to establish and maintain positive relationships and work effectively with adults and students. Is able to supervise, guide and support students with patience and kindness. Is able to motivate students to participate in educational and extracurricular activities and to want to learn. Is able to recognize signs of learning, physical, mental and social disabilities and take appropriate action. Is able to perform job tasks professionally in an environment where discrimination and other public issues are constant concerns. Has knowledge of and is able to use modern office practices and equipment, including computers. Has knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling; has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Is able to prepare and administer program budgets. Is skilled in applying a responsible attention to detail as necessary in preparing records, reports and correspondence. Is able to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to use independent judgment in performing tasks. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Is able to offer assistance to fellow employees as necessary. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with co-workers, personnel of other departments, parents, students and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.

Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high-quality communication and interaction with all District departments and divisions, coworkers and the public.

Quantity of Work: Performs the described "Specific Duties and Responsibilities" and related assignments efficiently and effectively to produce a quantity of work that consistently meets the standards and expectations of the District.

Dependability: Assumes responsibility for completing assigned work. Completes assigned work within deadlines in accordance with directives, District policy, standards, and prescribed procedures. Remains accountable for assigned responsibilities in the technical, human, and conceptual areas.

Attendance: Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to District policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and time off requests.

Initiative and Enthusiasm: Maintains an enthusiastic, self- reliant and self- starting approach to meet job responsibilities and accountabilities. Strives to anticipate work to be done and initiates proper and acceptable direction for the completion of work with a minimum of supervision and instruction.

Judgment: Exercises analytical judgment in areas of responsibility. Identifies problems or situations as they occur and specifies decision objectives. Identifies or assists in identifying alternative solutions to problems or situations. Implements decisions in accordance with prescribed and effective policies and procedures and with a minimum of errors. Seeks expert or experienced advice where appropriate and researches problems, situations, and alternatives before exercising judgment.

Cooperation: Accepts supervisory instruction and direction and strives to meet the goals and objectives of the same. Questions such as instruction and direction when clarification of results or consequences are justified, i.e., poor communications, variance with district policy or procedures, etc. Offers suggestions and recommendations to encourage and improve cooperation between all staff members and departments within the district.
