Primary Purpose

Provide special education students with direct speech services in accordance with their IEP. Maintaining documentation of services and IEP goal progress are required.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college; AND Licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist - Assistant through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations

Special Knowledge/Skills Knowledge of speech - language disorders and conditions Knowledge of appropriate intervention practices Ability to instruct and manage student behavior Effective communication skills Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills Knowledge and use of assistive technology is preferred

Experience

At least 1-2 years of public school experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies 1. Work with SLP Supervisor to participate in initial evaluations and re-evaluations as part of the multidisciplinary team to identify students who may be eligible for speech and language services in accordance with state and federal regulations.

2. Under the direction of the SLP Supervisor, participate in the development and implementation of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) for students with Speech Impairments 3. Under the direction of the SLP Supervisor, plan, schedule, and implement all direct and/or indirect services as written in the IEP. 4. Under the direction of the SLP Supervisor, provide services in the inclusive setting and coordinate intervention with the general education staff.

5. Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment (i.e. AT), that reflect accommodations and/or modifications for the individual needs of the students assigned.

6. Under the direction of the SLP Supervisor, prepare for the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings by: a. Updating existing IEPs b. Completing the Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) for Speech. c. Drafting accommodations and/or modifications for general education instruction d. Drafting new IEP goals and objectives, and after review by the SLP Supervisor, to send home to the parents for review.

7. Schedule and conduct (if appropriate) Annual ARD meetings for Speech only students, with direction by the SLP Supervisor.

8. Participate in staffing of children with Speech Impairments as needed and under the direction of the SLP Supervisor.

9. Under the direction of the SLP Supervisor, proactively seek parent support and input by communicating with them the needs, and progress of their child.

10. Provide written evidence of student progress toward the IEP goals and objectives by completing progress reports with direction of the SLP Supervisor and in accordance with district format and reporting timelines.

11. Maintain documentation of services provided in accordance with district format, timelines, and review by the SLP Supervisor.

12. Maintain confidentiality of student's records and information discussing issues only with the educational team responsible for the student's educational program and under the guidance of the SLP Supervisor.

Other 13. Maintain Continuing Education as required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) 14. Attend and participate in staff development opportunities designed for the special education staff and/or Speech staff, to improve job-related skills as directed by the SLP Supervisor.

15. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for a Speech-Language Pathologist - Assistant. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals, and other instructional equipment.

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Frequent walking.

Lifting: May require heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment;

Control student behavior through physical restraint (when a danger to themselves or others).

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress. May work prolonged or irregular hours.
