Duties Summary
Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring systems, electrical and mechanical equipment, and appurtenant fixtures; and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Traffic Division in Hilo. This Electrician, BC-10 position with the Department of Public Works is a career ladder position. The next level in the series is Traffic Electrician, BC-12, $6,790/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment. - Installs conduits, transformers, traffic signals, pull boxes, plugs, convenience outlets, and switches.
- Rewires buildings.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs pumps, motors, and various other types of electrical equipment and apparatus.
- Repairs and replaces broken or defective parts in motors, switches, and fixtures.
- Locates, tests, and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment.
- Replaces fuses and incandescent and fluorescent lights.
- Plans electrical installations.
- Inspects traffic signal and street lighting systems.
- Inspects and makes repairs of switch gears, registers, capacitor banks, power circuits, blowers, generators, and other related electrical equipment.
- Makes sketches of proposed wiring systems to facilitate repair work.
- Reads and interprets blueprints and working plans.
- Estimates cost, time, and materials needed for repair and maintenance work to be performed.
- Reports need for major repairs.
- May supervise others; supervises trades helpers as assigned.
- May operate a vehicle to transport materials and employees; may operate a heavy truck with aerial bucket (GVW of 33,000 pounds).
- Performs services in other trades when not utilized as an electrician.
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- completion of the eighth grade, and
- four (4) years of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journeylevel electrician, and
- possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Journeylevel Electrician's License at time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your valid license to your application), and
- possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Driver License (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing, (you will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire), and
- for CDL positions, at time of job interview, candidates must possess a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding.
