Description:
A professional nurse is an individual accountable for the care of a group of patients.
The Registered Nurse (RN) focuses on safe, effective patient and family-centered care, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes.
The RN is responsible for assisting in maintaining a financially stable unit.
The RN promotes personal development with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and education supported by a governance framework.
The RN supervises licensed and non-licensed staff members.
The RN is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the plan of care.
The RN focuses on patient and family comfort, education, and satisfaction.
The RN applies educational and professional experiences in the delivery of quality care and mentoring or precepting staff.


Job Responsibilities:
Assessment: Performs assessments and reassessments per policy and procedure or as warranted by patient condition.
The RN demonstrates the ability to make sound independent decisions.
Development and Implementation: Initiates, prioritizes, and implements the plan of care.
The RN reviews and revises the plan as indicated.
The RN collaborates with patients and families, as well as interdisciplinary services.
The RN utilizes resources appropriately to support the needs of the organization and patients.


Evaluation: The RN monitors and documents response to clinical interventions.
Education: The RN facilitates, coordinates, provides, and evaluates education specific to patient and family needs during their stay and at discharge.
Leadership: The RN delegates tasks to licensed and non-licensed personnel.
The RN functions as a mentor and preceptor, demonstrating and encouraging teamwork.
The RN identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement.
The RN participates in quality, safety, and service process improvement efforts.


The RN implements practice changes and complies with regulatory standards.
The RN participates in the governance model and is knowledgeable about activities that facilitate collaboration.
The RN participates in the development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities.
The RN effectively uses communication systems and participates in promoting cost-effective care.
The RN gives feedback to coworkers and is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment.
The RN promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment for all.


Patient Assessment: The RN recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care.
The RN synthesizes assessment data into meaningful information prior to communication with others.
The RN assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families.
The RN develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs.
Planning: The RN collaborates with patients and families to prepare or update the plan of care.
The RN makes use of available multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
The RN begins to use a full range of communication as a means to convey planning.
The RN identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care.
The RN demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems.
Research: The RN reads journals that contain studies or articles relevant to practice.
