Description: The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients by utilizing the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, and available resources within the institution's philosophy. Key responsibilities include performing all duties required by the unit specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care is crucial to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards. This plan is based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifications to the plan of care are made based upon continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others directly and privately is necessary to resolve issues. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers. Conferment with colleagues to expand the knowledge base is encouraged. Identifying personal learning needs and taking initiative to begin appropriate solutions is essential. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is expected.
