Registered Nurse - Assistant Nurse Manager

Summary In this position, you are eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program office determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (1‑5 years) after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency – in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduation from a professional nursing school approved by an accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE). OR completion of a master’s level bridge program with coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s in Nursing may allow registration with a state board before program completion. Upon attainment of a state license, appointment may be temporary and later converted to permanent after completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6) Graduates of foreign nursing schools may be accepted if they possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration that meets the requirement for graduation from an approved professional nursing school. Credit for foreign education above an associate degree requires formal equivalency validation from a recognized agency accepted by VA (e.g., International Consultants of Delaware). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates meeting basic education requirements but lacking licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade with a 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure, extendable up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis. Grade determination follows scope‑education and dimension criteria detailed in the online assessment (link). Level‑Specific Requirements: Nurse I – Level I: An AD or Diploma in Nursing with no additional experience, or a BSN with no additional experience. Nurse I – Level II: An AD or Diploma with 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Level I, or a BSN with no additional experience. Nurse I – Level III: An AD or Diploma with 2 years of professional nursing experience (at least 1 year equivalent to Level II), or a BSN with 1 year of equivalent experience, or an MSN or related master’s with no additional experience. Nurse II: BSN with 2 years of experience equivalent to Level III, or an MSN with 1 year of specialized experience, or a related master’s with a BSN and 1 year of specialized experience. Nurse III: MSN with 2 years of specialized experience (at least one year equivalent to Level II), or a related master’s with a BSN and 2 years of specialized experience. Doctoral degrees in Nursing or related fields apply with no additional experience (except for required specialized experience as noted above). Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties Functions as a clinical expert and is responsible for all elements of the nursing process when providing or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates delivery of care based on age‑specific components. Coordinates care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes and create innovative process‑improvement initiatives. Serves as an Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supporting the Nurse Manager (NM) with supervisory duties and 24/7 unit operations. Provides coverage for other ANMs as needed and directs orientation, training, and development of staff. Acts as educator, practitioner, and supervisor, modeling leadership and accountability at the personal, organizational, and staff levels. Promotes culturally competent care and a culture of accountability for high‑quality, cost‑effective outcomes. Engages in professional organizations to enhance leadership and career growth. Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards, including directives, policies, and SOPs. Participates in strategy planning, aligning nursing/clinical objectives with organizational strategic outcomes. Contributes to development of care delivery models and environmental design to ensure evidence‑based, accessible, affordable, and equitable patient care. Other duties as assigned. Dimensions of Nursing Practice Practice: Leads professional practice using the nursing process to improve evidence‑based and data‑driven outcomes. Veteran/Patient‑Driven Care: Provides care optimized for patient experience, satisfaction, and safety. Leadership: Communicates and collaborates as an effective leader of the interprofessional team, improving outcomes. Professional Development: Mentors, precepts, and teaches to expand knowledge and practice evaluation. Evidence‑Based Practice/Research: Leads integration of evidence‑based practice and research to improve quality of care and resource utilization. Benefits and Compensation Competitive salary with regular increases and potential performance awards. 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays). Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many programs available in retirement). One full and unrestricted state license required. Full‑time work schedule: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, with telework authorized on an ad‑hoc basis at supervisor discretion.
