Position Summary
The Surgical Technology Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction primarily in the lab setting, with supplemental didactic instruction, to students enrolled in the Surgical Technology program at Southeast Technical College (STC). This role emphasizes hands-on skills training, simulation-based learning, and assessment of student competencies while maintaining compliance with ARCSTSA/CAAHEP accreditation standards. The instructor also collaborates on curriculum design, student evaluation, and program development to ensure graduates are prepared for success in the operating room and certification as Surgical Technologists.

Essential Functions

• Provide instruction and supervision in surgical technology labs, ensuring students achieve competency in instrument handling, aseptic technique, surgical procedures, and related skills.
• Teach assigned didactic courses and integrate theory with lab-based learning experiences.
• Serve as needed in clinical instruction, including supervision of students in the clinical setting, evaluation of case participation, and assessment of professional behaviors, in compliance with accreditation requirements.
• Develop, update, and deliver instructional materials, lab exercises, skills check-offs, and assessments aligned with accreditation standards and industry best practices.
• Proctor and evaluate skills and instrument examinations, including set-up, administration, and feedback.
• Maintain accurate student records, including skills assessments, case logs, attendance, and progress reports, in compliance with program and accrediting requirements.
• Collaborate with program faculty on curriculum mapping, exam design, accreditation reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Mentor and advise students regarding professional behavior, operating room culture, and strategies for success in clinical placements.
• Participate in program recruitment, orientation (Jumpstart), simulation activities, and community engagement opportunities.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and professional lab environment consistent with surgical standards.
• Engage in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of surgical technology, pedagogy, and accreditation requirements.
• Primary assignment: Lab-based instruction (skills, simulation, assessments).
• Secondary assignment: Didactic teaching.
• Clinical instruction: May include supervision of students in clinical settings, evaluation of case participation, and assessment of professional behaviors, as needed to meet program and accreditation requirements.
• Additional contributions: Curriculum development, accreditation compliance, and program support activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications

• Education: Associate's degree required in Surgical Technology or related field in accordance with ARCSTSA & CAAHEP accreditation requirements. Bachelor's degree preferred or required within 3 years of employment.
• Experience: Minimum of three years of operating room experience as a surgical technologist.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Operating room standard of hospital environment and contains surgical instruments and equipment. Moderate to high noise levels typical of operating room environment. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Job requires moderate to long periods of standing. Possible exposure to surgical equipment injuries, human tissue, and body fluids.
