Statement of Work Details Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life. Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks; make minor modifications or adaptations to established methods, procedures, and or techniques to solve problems in the work. Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests, and analyses such as ELISA readers, Spectrophotometers, and flow cytometry instruments. Prepare various media, stock supplies, and other reagents for use in the laboratory. Perform a wide variety of complex procedures and techniques which include cell tissue culture of malaria parasites including both blood stages and sexual stages, serological assays ELISA, column chromatography, flow cytometry, and analyses using the polymerase chain reaction PCR Western Blot. Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures Assume primary responsibility for development, standardization and application of the malaria parasite growth inhibition assay GIA as part of the GIA Reference Center; this standardized assay is available to investigators throughout the world to evaluate potential malaria vaccine candidates and is supported by PATH‑MVI and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Contribute to studies using the mosquito membrane feeding assay MFA, which involves feeding of sexual stages of malaria parasites to mosquitoes along with animal or human antibodies; work with staff to evaluate candidates for malaria vaccines which might block person‑to‑person transmission. Take primary responsibility for sending and receiving materials in the laboratory including shipping of samples both domestically and internationally; utilize knowledge of shipping regulations for Class II pathogens. Participate in the ongoing clinical studies of immunity to malaria in Mali, West Africa. These studies are designed to increase our understanding of the acquisition of immunity to malaria in African children, and it includes studies of both cells and antibodies that are specific to malaria parasites; travel to the field site, organize logistics for these studies, train Malian staff both in the field and in the laboratory, and laboratory analysis of samples obtained from children and adults in our clinical studies. Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment Write reports of findings, state methods and procedures, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved, and results of experiments. Analyze, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the project officers as part of the planning process for subsequent studies. Provide training to post-baccalaureate students, post-doctoral fellows and scientific visitors in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and in the performance of specialized procedures, techniques. Perform QC of the laboratory including upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment upon government approval; handle biological materials, infectious agents, biological wastes. Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures Perform computer analysis of data and use computers and various software programs to prepare data for publication. Assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication and where necessary perform searches of the scientific literature for laboratory methodology. Write reports of findings, stating methods and procedures, including any modifications employee, specimens and materials involved, and results of experiments. In general results will be recorded in a laboratory notebook or shared electronic drive. Provide training to students and other laboratory personnel in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and in the performance of specialized procedures, techniques. Aid in developing and revising SOPs for the laboratory. Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks or in computerized databases. Prepare various media, stock supplies, and other reagents for use in the laboratory.
