The Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and obey all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct.

Essential functions include advising students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety. The Bus Driver must also assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation. Additionally, the Bus Driver assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport as well as during emergency situations.

The Bus Driver attends in-service trainings, department briefings, and workshops as required for the purpose of gathering information required to perform the job functions. Pre-trip and post-trip inspections are performed for the purpose of ensuring safe operating condition of the vehicle and compliance with mandated guidelines. Reports are prepared and submitted for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines.

The Bus Driver reports observations and/or incidents for the purpose of communicating information to the appropriate personnel to ensure the safety of all passengers. The Bus Driver ensures that the bus always has sufficient fuel, operates the bus in such a way that all road and safety regulations are always followed, and immediately reports any traffic citations or violations to the Director of Transportation. The Bus Driver follows procedures to guarantee no child is left alone on the bus without adult supervision at any time, including insuring all children have departed the bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening, and during field trips or other special trips).

The Bus Driver keeps the bus clean and free of debris; follows other bus cleaning procedures. Passengers are prepared for emergency situations, to include, but not limited to, conducting required safety drills. The Bus Driver performs other duties as required. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time. The Bus Driver deals with residents and members of the public, as well as students and employees, in a courteous and respectful manner. The Bus Driver demonstrates responsible leadership during all trips, including local and long distance trips. The Bus Driver is able to learn and comprehend information from Procedures Manuals and other materials.

Educational/training requirements include possessing a valid license to drive a school bus, which will include a Commercial Driver's License (Class A or Class B with P and S endorsements). An Oklahoma School Bus Certificate, which includes 25 hours of training in a state approved course, is also required. The Bus Driver must be at least 21 years of age.

Working conditions include possessing the manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus. The Bus Driver must be able to work a flexible schedule. The Bus Driver must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions. The Bus Driver must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. The Bus Driver must submit to initial drug and alcohol test, as well as continual random drug and alcohol tests.

Terms of employment include a 173-day work calendar and a 1.328 ratio - Yukon Public Schools Pay Information.

Status: Non-Exempt Support. Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy of evaluation for classified personnel.
