Schedule: 15 Hours Per Week (2-3 Days on-Campus)

Term: Fall & Spring Semesters

Job Summary

The Assistant Chaplain serves as a spiritual leader, mentor, and connector for Black Student Ministries (BSM) at the University of Maryland. This individual will help students know God personally, grow in their faith through discipleship and community, and develop as leaders who positively impact campus and beyond. The Assistant Chaplain will play a key role in teaching, leadership development, relationship-building, and ministry growth.

Responsibilities 

Teaching & Spiritual Formation

• Plan and teach weekly BSM Chapel gatherings during the Fall and Spring semesters.
• Lead Bible studies, discipleship groups, and spiritual development opportunities.
• Recruit, train, and coordinate student-led small groups.
• Provide biblical guidance and spiritual encouragement to students.

Leadership Development

• Recruit, mentor, and develop members of the BSM Executive Board and student leadership team.
• Equip student leaders to plan, lead, and execute ministry initiatives and events.
• Facilitate leadership training, team meetings, retreats, and development opportunities.
• Help cultivate a healthy leadership culture focused on spiritual growth, accountability, and service.

Relationship Building & Ministry Growth

• Mentor, encourage, and provide pastoral care to students while helping them navigate their spiritual, personal, and leadership development.
• Build relationships with campus organizations, student leaders, university departments, churches, and community partners to foster collaboration and expand the ministry’s impact.
• Support outreach, organizational development, fundraising initiatives, and grant-related efforts that increase student engagement and strengthen the long-term growth of BSM.

Qualifications

• A Master’s degree in Theology, Divinity, Ministry, Biblical Studies, or a related theological discipline is highly preferred. 
• Demonstrated Christian faith and commitment to spiritual leadership.
• Experience teaching Scripture, discipling others, and developing leaders.
• Passion for college students and young adult ministry.
• Strong communication, mentoring, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse students, organizations, and community partners.
