Police Officer - Entry Level

Working Hours and Location The Department is located in Lemon Creek. Patrol officers work 12‑hour shifts that rotate between day and night on a quarterly basis. Officers may transfer to specialty units such as Criminal Investigations, Drug, School Resource, Airport, Downtown, SWAT, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Crisis Negotiation Team, Accident Reconstruction Team, Drug Recognition Expert, Firearms Instructor, Arrest Control Tactics Instructor, Less‑than‑Lethal Instructor, and other units. Responsibilities Conduct patrols on foot, bicycle, or vehicle, observing public activities and using discretion to enforce law or conduct peacekeeping. Operate police vehicles, investigate accidents, issue citations, and enforce compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Respond to emergencies and public disturbances, administer first aid, direct traffic, and request assistance as needed. Investigate civil and criminal complaints, analyze situations, and take appropriate action. Obtain statements, collect evidence, prepare complaints, and serve process papers. Refer victims to agencies such as Family and Youth Services and medical authorities. Operate specialized equipment such as cameras, radar, blood‑alcohol testing instruments, and various weapons. Apprehend, pursue, restrain, and detain suspects; make arrests and transport prisoners. Testify in court in civil and criminal cases. Prepare investigative reports on dangerous or unusual circumstances. Assist other law‑enforcement agencies. Complete special duty assignments including public speaking, search and rescue, public education programs, and training sessions. Perform additional duties as required. Experience None. No prior experience required. Education High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate. Other Requirements Must be a citizen of the United States or U.S. National. Must be at least 21 years of age at appointment. Must possess or obtain a valid Alaska Driver's License by the date of appointment and for continued employment. Background and Selection Process Applicants will undergo a background investigation that includes a criminal background review, fingerprinting, investigative review, polygraph examination, and psychological testing. All information provided will be verified. Misrepresentation of any information may exclude the applicant from further consideration or result in dismissal if employed. Appointment is contingent upon successful completion of the background process, medical evaluation, psychological evaluation, and receipt of negative pre‑employment testing results for controlled substances. Applicants who have used marijuana within the past year will be automatically disqualified. Special Notice Minimum standards for selection are the Basic Standards for Police Officers (13 AAC 85). Recruitment Status Open and continuous recruitment. Eleven Police Officer positions are currently vacant. Once vacancies are filled, this recruitment will be used to create an eligible list for future vacancies within the next twelve months, subject to interview and re‑evaluation of current job performance.
