Damage Prevention Underground Locator

Position Concept Accurately locate and mark Tampa Electric Company’s underground facilities to ensure public safety and minimize damage resulting from excavation work. Also, inspect distribution facilities and take appropriate action. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Accurately locate and mark the location of underground assets on roadways, private property, and other locations using required spray paints, flags, equipment, and photograph sites. Utilize computer to receive/complete locate tickets and obtain related work descriptions. (65%) Inform excavators of any work that could endanger the safety of the public or TEC facilities. (15%) Notify appropriate TEC departments of any maintenance needs, hazardous or environmentally sensitive conditions observed. (10%) Investigate and provide specific written reports on all instances of cable damage to support the legal recovery process. (10%) Relationships Internal: interacts with multiple levels in the organization (Distribution Design Technicians, One Source, Service Area Representatives, Planners, System Service Dispatchers, Project Managers, Line Supervisors). External: interacts with customers, governmental agencies, contractors, and developers to maintain positive relations. Qualifications Education Minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Preferred: associate or bachelor’s degree or technical school certificate. Licenses / Certifications Valid Florida driver’s license and a safe driving record. Direct Experience Minimum of 3 years of direct work experience in electric underground line/cable locating. Experience operating ground‑penetrating radar and gas line locating is helpful. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, IrthNet, or Dig Track ticket management system. Knowledge of complex map reading, construction prints, drawings, TEC distribution construction specifications, and underground construction practices. Understanding of company’s safe work practices, regulations, and policies. Independent judgment in assignments and decision‑making affecting company operations. Working knowledge of transmission and distribution facilities; understanding of National Electric Safety Codes; OSHA competency in working with energized equipment over 70 volts. Competency in operating 3M’s Dynatel, Vivax V‑Loc Pro, and Radiodetection digital detection units. Preferred ability to locate gas, water, and fiber. Exposure to aerosol paint; required to respond to emergency locate requests after normal hours. Physical Demands / Requirements Navigate between sitting/driving and standing/walking positions over 20 times per workday. Walk on or around grass, gravel, concrete, ditches, construction zones, long distances up to three miles per locate and several miles during the workday. Lift up to 75 lbs., including equipment into and out of the locate vehicle.
