Location: Novi, MI

Shift Hours
• 7:00am to 3:30pm


• Maximum of 5 days of RTO for the full duration of the contract - preferably not consecutive

Job Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing, handling, and maintaining surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment required during surgical procedures. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and ensures the operating room is properly prepared for each procedure. Provides additional support with patient preparation, transportation, safety, comfort, and emergent situations.


Key Responsibilities

• Scrub and assist with general surgical procedures.
• Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical tables, instruments, equipment, and supplies according to the procedure.
• Verify proper functioning of surgical instruments and equipment and report repair needs appropriately.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and ensure required supplies and equipment are available.
• Follow departmental policies, quality assurance programs, safety requirements, environmental standards, and infection control procedures.
• Demonstrate cost-consciousness when opening sterile supplies and handling surgical instruments.
• Respond appropriately to emergent situations according to established procedures.
• Deliver necessary supplies and equipment to surgical and ancillary departments.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized operating room environments.
• Clean and stock rooms and return equipment and supplies to designated storage areas.
• Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient and department information.
• Assist the RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the operating room.
• Assist leadership with maintaining appropriate supply par levels and efficient supply management.
• Participate in audits, department task forces, governance activities, and quality initiatives.
• Complete required education and participate in ongoing department-specific training and continuing education.
• May train or precept new Surgical Technologist I employees within the assigned core area.
• Participate in discussions regarding job enrichment and career development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Minimum 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience required.
• Previous experience in Neuro surgery (Spine and Brain) OR Orthopedics (Total Joints) required.
• Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and understand assigned surgical procedures.
• Knowledge of surgical instruments, supplies, equipment, sterile technique, and operating room procedures.
• Ability to safely lift and move patients.
• Ability to push, pull, and/or lift case carts, instrument trays, and surgical equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
• Ability to work effectively in a patient-care environment that may involve exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, confidential information, and hazardous gases.
• Strong teamwork, communication, organization, and patient-care skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Additional Requirements

• Must be able to meet the physical demands of the operating room environment.
• Must be able to work safely around surgical equipment, hazardous gases, and potentially communicable conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.

Required Certification & Licensure

• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
• Candidates without current BLS certification must obtain BLS certification within one month of the start date.

Working Conditions
Position may be based in a hospital or ambulatory/mobile imaging setting. Exposure to radiation, high-voltage equipment, and infectious diseases is possible with appropriate safety precautions. Position may require assisting with patient transfers and moving equipment.
