Datacenter Field Operations Technician

Location: New Albany, Ohio — Onsite Employment Type: Contract 6+ months Work Model: 100% Onsite

About the Role

We are seeking experienced Datacenter Field Operations Technicians to support a global hyperscaler at a major data center campus in New Albany, Ohio.

This is a hands-on troubleshooting, break/fix, installation, and maintenance role focused on diagnosing and resolving physical-layer network issues, performing preventive and corrective maintenance, and supporting large-scale AI infrastructure deployments.

The technician will work as part of a 24×7 onsite operations team, partnering closely with network engineering, provisioning, facilities, supply-chain, and project teams to ensure reliable data center operations and timely infrastructure builds.

Location & Coverage

Work Location: New Albany, Ohio

Coverage Model:

• Rotating Day, Swing, and Graveyard shifts
• On-call support on a rotating basis
• Extended shifts may be required during surge or ramp-up periods
• 5 days on / 2 days off
• Approximately 40 hours per week

Shift Schedule

• Day: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM ET
• Swing: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM ET
• Graveyard: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM ET

Shift differentials may apply for Swing and Graveyard shifts according to company policy.

Technical Skills

Skill Area - Requirements

Structured Cabling - Expert-level installation of copper and fiber cabling, including Cat6A, OM4, OS2, MPO/MTP

Fiber Optics - Fiber splicing, termination, OTDR testing, cleaning, connector inspection, and microscope inspection

Rack & Stack - Data center rack installation, cable management, labeling, and dressing

Hardware Handling - Network switch/router installation, line-card insertion, optics installation, and ESD compliance

Testing Tools - OTDR, optical power meter, VFL, loopback adapters, and cable certifiers

Physical-Layer Troubleshooting - Troubleshooting Layer 1 connectivity issues, including light levels, fiber breaks, damaged cables, and faulty connectors

Ticketing Systems - Ability to use workflow and ticket-management systems for task tracking, documentation, and closure

Liquid Cooling - Familiarity with Air Assisted Liquid Cooling (AALC) rack systems, hose connections, and valve operations is preferred

Required Experience

• 5–12 years of experience in data center cabling, network hardware installation, telecommunications, or related field operations
• Hands-on experience installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting fiber optic infrastructure
• Experience working in enterprise or hyperscale data center environments
• Experience supporting large-scale rack deployment projects involving 50+ racks
• Familiarity with hot/cold aisle environments, raised floors, overhead cable trays, and structured data center infrastructure
• Experience with liquid-cooled rack systems/AALC is preferred
• Experience with barcode scanning and asset-management workflows is preferred

Preferred Qualifications

• BICSI Installer or Technician certification, or equivalent
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
• Experience working in hyperscale, multi-tenant, or campus-scale data center environments
• Familiarity with DCIM and ticketing systems used for asset, fault, and maintenance tracking
• Background in telecom carrier operations, enterprise network repair, or large-scale infrastructure deployment

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to:

• Lift 50+ lbs repeatedly
• Work at heights using personnel lifts and ladders
• Work in confined spaces, hot aisles, and active electrical environments while following appropriate safety procedures
• Work in warm data hall environments, typically 75–85°F
• Stand and walk for extended periods, including shifts of up to 10–12 hours when operationally required
• Perform fine-motor tasks involving fiber connectors, cleaning tools, and optical components
• Wear required PPE for extended periods
• Follow all applicable EHS, LOTO, and ESD procedures

Core Responsibilities

1. Rack Activity Services

• Perform rack turn-up activities, including receiving, unpacking, rack-and-stack, cabling, and energization
• Install network cabling for compute racks, including:
• Front-end (FE) cabling to fabric switches
• Back-end (BE) cabling to spine/aggregation switches
• Goalpost cable routing and dressing
• Perform rack turn-down and decommissioning activities
• Support rack redeployment, relocation, and reinstallation
• Receive, inspect, and validate pre-integrated racks
• Perform final connectivity checks following rack installation
• Manage workflow through ticketing platforms and close assigned tasks
• Support network cabling for Air Assisted Liquid Cooling (AALC) racks

2. Circuit QA/QC & Testing

• Perform loopback testing on network circuits following installation
• Conduct fiber continuity and performance testing using:
• OTDR
• Optical power meter
• VFL
• Perform PON passive testing and validation
• Clean fiber connectors using approved fiber-cleaning procedures and equipment
• Inspect connectors using appropriate inspection microscopes
• Identify, document, and escalate circuit failures
• Support deployment and validation of mid-box testing solutions
• Conduct as-built documentation audits
• Verify equipment placement and connectivity against approved documentation

3. Break/Fix & Repair

• Diagnose and repair failed copper and fiber network circuits
• Troubleshoot physical-layer connectivity issues, including:
• Low or abnormal optical light levels
• Fiber breaks
• Damaged cables
• Dirty or defective connectors
• Faulty optics
• Replace faulty switches, line cards, optics, transceivers, and cables according to approved MOPs
• Perform pluggable/transceiver optics replacement while following ESD procedures
• Coordinate RMA activities for defective hardware
• Perform hot-swap procedures on production equipment according to established priority and SLA requirements
• Respond to incidents based on severity levels, including P0–P7 priorities

4. Operations & Maintenance

• Perform Inside Plant Preventive Maintenance (ISPM) according to established schedules
• Conduct fiber-cleaning campaigns throughout data halls
• Perform goalpost cable dressing and redressing
• Support power QA activities, including tap-box operations, during new builds
• Provide vendor oversight and escort third-party personnel when required
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas according to EHS standards

5. Safety & Compliance

• Follow all applicable data center EHS requirements and procedures
• Comply with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for energized work
• Wear required PPE, including ESD wrist straps, safety glasses, hard hats, and other site-specific equipment
