Lead Pharmacy Technician

The Lead Pharmacy Technician supports the coordination of operations, mentoring and coaching pharmacy Associates, and delivering expert proficiency and efficiency in pharmacy services. The Lead Pharmacy Technician acts as a liaison between the pharmacy and inpatient clinical and/or operational teams to ensure seamless integration with workflows on medication delivery, administration, ordering, and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. The Lead Pharmacy Technician collaborates with inpatient pharmacy leadership by overseeing the coordination and progression of pharmacy Associate training and education, supporting departmental initiatives, and verification of compliance with departmental, organizational, and regulatory requirements, while maintaining best practices.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Prioritizes the coordination and delegation of technician tasks, ensuring a well-equipped team each shift, acting as a primary point of contact for pharmacy Associates and clinical teams regarding any issues or discrepancies that needs resolution.
• Engages in and supports the design of departmental projects, workflows, and operational upgrades, taking initiative to determine, and enhance processes, frameworks, and workflow efficiencies.
• Serves as pharmacy systems subject matter expert, leading systems upgrades while resolving issues through troubleshooting in partnership with pharmacy leadership.
• Oversees ADC systems, by tracking and monitoring any issues or discrepancies, while supporting diversion controls, and helps to resolve system problems, through performing troubleshooting techniques.
• Reviews and analyzes usage of prescribed medications to support contingency planning, and drug shortage mitigation and redistribution, providing direction to pharmacy Associates to carry out established action plan(s).
• Coordinates and monitors the development of training and education for pharmacy Associates, supporting departmental onboarding, and assisting with competency tracking in partnership with leadership.
• Coaches and mentors pharmacy Associates, supporting cross-functional training for continued growth and development, coaching through any opportunities for process or workflow improvement.
• Helps maintain regulatory compliance standards, ensuring Associate adherence in the preparation of sterile and non-sterile compounded medications in accordance with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) requirements.
• Verifies adherence to departmental and organizational policies and procedures, as well as established pharmacy workflows and safety protocols, while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements from State of Florida and Federal agencies; such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Work Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Work Experience: Three (3) years' progressive experience as a Pharmacy Technician in the inpatient setting.
• Licensure: Registered Pharmacy Technician licensure in the State of Florida.
• Certification: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) prior to start date and maintained.
• Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Expert competency in sterile/non-sterile compounding and related tasks, to be demonstrated through completion of advanced courses and proven proficiency in pharmacy workflows. Proven analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to build and implement technician staff scheduling, support inventory management processes, and takes initiative to propose solutions to workflow inefficiencies. Ability to support leadership with the investigation and resolution of Controlled Medications discrepancies. Ability to manage multiple priorities, balance competing deadlines, and perform effectively in fast-paced or high-pressure environment with minimal supervision. Must have ability to appropriately and efficiently complete projects as delegated by pharmacy leadership. Strong leadership, and emotional intelligence; fosters teamwork, collaboration, and a positive, solutions-oriented work environment. Exceptional communication skillsboth verbal and writtenwith the ability to convey complex information clearly and professionally. Highly organized and detail-oriented to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance in pharmacy practice. Demonstrates patience, positive attitude, cooperation, and critical-thinking skills. Skills in active-listening, and relationship-building with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders. Has desire to strengthen skills in executing sound judgment, adaptability, and self-awareness in dynamic or changing environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Work Experience: Five (5) years' progressive experience as a Pharmacy Technician in the inpatient setting.
• One (1) year experience performing sterile compounding.

Physical Requirements:

• Physically agile; may require walking, standing, running, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching frequently.
• May occasionally include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
• May require moving in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces, including reaching out and above shoulders, or overhead.
• May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without assistance up to 90% of the assigned shift.
• May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting, and/or low to loud noise.
• May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles following OSHA and CDC guidelines.
• Communicating with others to exchange information.
• Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
• Workspace may vary from open to confined.
• May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
