Physician - General Neurology

Overview

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligible applicants must meet specific VHA policy requirements and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application.

Responsibilities

1. Evaluate, diagnose, and treat Veterans with neurological conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
2. Perform and record history and physical examinations and document data from clinic visits.
3. Evaluate, consult, develop diagnoses, and manage the Veteran’s care.
4. Enter progress notes in the computerized medical record and complete workload documentation promptly.
5. Provide medical care encompassing acute and chronic conditions and all appropriate preventive care for both male and female Veterans.
6. Order diagnostic tests, medications, and laboratory tests as medically relevant for each patient.
7. Provide timely follow‑up on results and patient inquiries, including secure messages and other patient communications.
8. Determine medical assessment and develop treatment plans according to accepted protocols.
9. Prescribe medications according to the approved formulary and in accordance with federal and state law.
10. Educate patients regarding medical conditions and recommended treatments, including nutritional counseling, smoking cessation, immunizations, and preventive health measures.
11. Consult other specialties as appropriate, in accordance with service agreements.

Work Schedule

Monday‑Friday; 8:00 am‑4:30 pm. Hours are negotiable based on applicant/agency needs.

Conditions of Employment

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship.
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an approved U.S. or foreign institution meeting ECFMG or LCME/COCA accreditation for the year of graduation.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. Options include:
  • Approved ACGME or AOA accredited residency or fellowship.
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S.
  • Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. related to the position; U.S. fellowships are creditable.
• Exceptions:
  • Physician residents currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) subject to full licensure and intermittent duty as authorized.
  • In rare circumstances, a facility director may seek approval for reasonable exceptions to residency requirements based on an applicant’s qualifications.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements

The role requires primarily walking, sitting, speaking, driving, telephone use, and light lifting (under 15 lb). Candidates must withstand daily pressures and stress.

Education

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from a school accredited by LCME, COCA, or meeting ECFMG eligibility for foreign graduates.
