This Phlebotomist II position focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while supporting smooth laboratory workflow across multiple clinic locations. You will collect, process, and prepare specimens for testing, ensure accurate documentation, and provide clear, courteous explanations to patients. The role requires strong multitasking, critical thinking, and customer service skills, as well as the ability to work independently and manage a high volume of daily draws.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
• Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders.
• Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity during handling and transit.
• Store specimens at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes.
• Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems.
• Assist with troubleshooting issues in specimen collection and processing and make workflow improvement recommendations when needed.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory standards.
• Attend and complete annual departmental training sessions and maintain required competencies.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to address inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
• Work primarily with adult and geriatric patients while also performing pediatric draws, including heel sticks on babies.
• Handle approximately 30–40 blood draws per shift while maintaining accuracy, quality, and patient-centered care.
• Travel between designated clinic sites as scheduled and report to assigned locations according to the weekly schedule.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
• Demonstrated experience performing blood draws using straight needles.
• Experience performing pediatric through geriatric blood draws, including heel sticks on babies, with at least 1–2 years of exposure.
• Proficiency in venipuncture and routine phlebotomy techniques.
• Experience drawing and processing specimens, including centrifugation and preparation for testing.
• Ability to work independently and manage 30–40 blood draws per shift.
• Strong multitasking and critical thinking skills to handle varied workflow and patient needs.
• Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
• Ability to read and accurately follow physicians' orders and laboratory requisitions.
• Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license.
• Reliable means of transportation for travel between clinic sites.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience processing specimens after drawing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging.
• Familiarity with laboratory environments and procedures for specimen handling and integrity.
• Comfort working with adults, geriatrics, and pediatric patients in a variety of clinic settings.
• Ability to answer phone inquiries and communicate laboratory results when appropriate.
• Willingness to attend annual departmental training and maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements.

Work Environment

• This role is based out of a primary patient service center in Chicago, where training will take place during the first two weeks of employment.
• After training, you will travel regularly to multiple clinic locations, including sites in Skokie, Harvey, South Holland, Oak Brook, and Naperville.
• You will receive your schedule one week in advance so you know where to report each day.
• The position requires availability Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., with rotating Saturday shifts from either 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A weekday off is provided during weeks that include a Saturday shift.
• The work involves active patient interaction in clinical settings, frequent specimen handling and processing, and adherence to strict safety and regulatory standards. You will work with adults, geriatric patients, and pediatric patients in a variety of clinic environments, and you must be comfortable traveling between locations as part of your regular duties.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
