Job Details Job ID: 5801144 Application Deadline: Jul 07, 2026 11:59 PM (Eastern Standard Time) Posted: Jun 24, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Position Type: Classified / Non-Contracted Salary: $20.49 to $27.57 SY Job Title: Lead Driver FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Assistant Director to Transportation Department Days Worked: 210 Days (11 months) Job Description Department or Location: Transportation Department Job Qualifications Education: Must possess a High School Diploma or GED Certification or Licensure: Must possess a valid Class A or Class B state commercial driver’s license with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements and meet MVR Standard Qualifications Skills: Knowledge of safe driving practices, principles, techniques, and strategies for training school bus drivers; understanding of the State Motor Vehicle Code and applicable laws; familiarity with large pupil transportation systems; strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills; knowledge of bus driver training and safety programs; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with Board Members, school district personnel, students, parents, and the community; reading, interpreting, and explaining rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; excellent written and interpersonal skills Work Experience: Previous commercial driver (CDL) experience required; School System Transportation experience preferred; supervisory or lead driver experience preferred Primary Duty This position is responsible for supervising the functions of school bus drivers and attendants/monitors, assigning them to different buses on a rotating basis if necessary, driving buses of various sizes, and serving as the contact person for schools regarding bus schedules Essential Duties and Responsibilities Coordinate, plan, and conduct coverage to ensure students are transported to and from school on time Provide daily supervision of school bus drivers within an assigned zone to ensure consistent performance of duties Ensure drivers and attendants/monitors understand the importance of on‑time daily service and record accurate attendance, time, and disciplinary information Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Driver Trainers, and Human Resources Liaison on training programs aligned with the Georgia Pupil Transportation System and Richmond County School System curriculum Review monthly training topics with drivers and attendants/monitors in your zone Coordinate with the Field Administrator to provide daily reports to the Manager of Business Affairs on concerns such as attendance and time worked Plan and implement training programs; work with Driver Trainers for Basic School Bus Driving Courses Assist with in‑service programs to ensure drivers and monitors follow State guidelines Conduct training on safe driving and working methods and procedures as required Help school bus drivers and attendants/monitors manage student behavior and work‑related situations Ensure drivers and attendants/monitors know proper wheelchair securement and special‑needs student requirements Instruct, supervise, evaluate performance of assigned personnel; schedule and assign work; counsel and recommend disciplinary actions Collaborate with the Assistant Director and Human Resources Liaison to evaluate drivers and attendants/monitors Be readily available to cover different routes as needed within your zone Attend meetings and remain current with rules, regulations, policies, and laws Continuously review routes in assigned zones and recommend improvements to the Operations Manager of Routing Efficiency and the Assistant Director of Transportation Maintain records (attendance, time worked, performance, routes, etc.) and review student misconduct reports Conduct bus evacuations and associated procedures; ensure safety when transporting students and managing their needs Keep up‑to‑date knowledge of program rules, regulations, and requirements Perform other duties assigned by supervisors or required by law, board policy, or department handbook as necessary to the efficient operation of the school system Work Environment / Physical Demands The work environment is representative of those encountered while performing essential functions.
