Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill future, multiple, part-time, intermittent (approximately 8-40 hours per week as needed) Veterinary Technician 2 positions for the Lois Bate Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital within the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

The IntermittentVeterinary Technician 2 (Vet Tech 2)position provides irregular, flexible coverage to support hospital operations during planned or unplanned absences of regularly employed Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVTs). Coverage needs may arise in advance (e.g., scheduled leave) or on short notice due to unexpected circumstances.

Applications submitted to this recruitment pool are reviewed on an as needed basis. Qualified candidates will be contacted when positions become available.

Vet Tech 2 staff must be adaptable and prepared to work in any area of the hospital, based on patient care demands and operational priorities. Assignments will vary depending on caseload and staffing needs to ensure continuity of high-quality patient care.

The Vet Tech 2 performs duties specific to all technical service areas of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital including receiving, internal medicine, surgical procedures, anesthesia, specialty medicine, rural veterinary service, theriogenology, diagnostic imaging, critical care, plus after-hours and emergency duties, in addition to assisting and instructing students in basic veterinary techniques. Other service areas may be added as they are needed and as resources become available. The Vet Tech 2 provides optimal patient care and responds to emergency situations.

The Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine provides veterinary professional and graduate programs leading to the DVM and MS degrees, and operates the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The College budget (from all sources) approximates $16 million annually, which supports educational programs, veterinary medical and diagnostic public services, and research programs with broad impacts related to animal and human health. The College employs approximately 200 faculty and staff, plus student employees.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides primary and referral health care for animals in Oregon and the region, participates in the education of veterinary students through clinical training, develops novel diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for veterinary care, and provides consultation service to practitioners and clients.

Key Responsibilities

Technicians may be assigned to any of the areas below with varying percentages depending on the needs of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Technicians may be required to provide coverage in any area of the hospital on an as-needed basis.

70% PATIENT CARE :

GENERAL HOSPITAL / CLIENT SERVICES :

  • Coordinates client/patient in-hospital and out- patient admissions and releases with Hospital reception; collaborates with Hospital reception, surgery, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, internal and specialty medicine, and any responsible service in areas of appointment scheduling. Obtains client/patient histories, assigns students to cases, ensures proper case management, financial accounting, and record- keeping; creates client estimates; educates client in patient postoperative care; assists in phone call- backs to obtain progress reports, answer client questions, schedule rechecks, communicate with referring veterinarians, etc.; and counsels in client/pet losses in an empathetic and professional manner. Maintains service-specific supplies and equipment. Utilizes cultural competence and sensitivity in all patient care and client interactions, respecting the diverse backgrounds of clients and colleagues.

GENERAL PATIENT CARE :

  • Assists with and/or performs out-patient procedures and treatments-endoscopic exams, lameness exams, diagnostic imaging, and minor surgical and diagnostic procedures; assists in obtaining specific diagnostics necessary for medical evaluations; administers medications (PO, IM, SQ, IV) and treatments as directed; makes equipment and supplies available; assists with tabling and restraining animal patients. Prepares patients for hospitalization (intravenous catheter placement, fluid therapy, etc.). Provides guidance to assistants, animal attendants and student workers regarding hospital maintenance and patient care. Provides assistance/organization for clinical research projects.

INTERNAL MEDICINE :

  • Maintains and operates endoscopic equipment and assists with endoscopic procedures. Assists with other Internal Medicine procedures (feeding tube placement, tracheal wash, CSF taps, etc.) and maintains associated supplies. Prepares for and assists with interventional radiologic procedures. Coordinates Preventative Health Clinic.

SURGERY :

  • Coordinates pre-surgery set-up of operating rooms according to surgical schedule and sets up instruments and equipment for surgeries. Transfers patient demographic information onto surgery/anesthesia record and records patient information (e.g., weight, position, vital statistics). Assists during surgery by providing the appropriate instruments and equipment required for a specific surgical procedure; provides technical support to veterinarians during medical and surgical diagnostic procedures); assists with tabling and restraining animals, providing nursing to critical-care patients and monitoring effective medications.

  • Cleans, assesses workability, performs minor maintenance, and identifies needed repairs of surgical equipment (e.g. endoscope, arthroscopy equipment, cryosurgical unit, nitrogen and electric drills, electrocautery and suction equipment) and/or rooms, ensures surgical supply room is well equipped with surgical packs, drapes, instruments, gowns, gloves, suture materials, and pharmaceutical supplies and maintains adequate level of supplies for surgery. Works closely with Central Sterile/Drug Room to ensure appropriate supply and preparation of surgical equipment, instruments, and pharmaceutical. Maintains finders guide.

CARDIOLOGY :

  • Perform ECGs, blood pressures, apply Holter and event monitors and maintain related equipment. Assist with other Cardiology procedures (echocardiograms, contrast studies, centesis) and maintain associated supplies. Prepare for and assist with interventional cath lab procedures (pacemaker placement, balloon valvuloplasty, PDA occlusion, etc.). Maintain and assist in operating fluoroscopic equipment.

ONCOLOGY :

  • Prepare and administer chemotherapeutic agents while following and enforcing all safety protocols and policies. Order closed-system chemotherapy administration supplies. Coordinate maintenance of the biosafety hood. Admit regular chemotherapy patients to the hospital. Assist with other Oncology procedures (aspirates, biopsies, etc.) and maintain associated supplies.

CRITICAL CARE :

  • Responsible for following clinician-directed medical orders, ie: performing treatments and diagnostics, administering medications and nutrition, and monitoring patient status. Initiates and/or assists with implementation of emergency procedures during critical periods to sustain life of animal. Under direction of clinician, monitors animal recovery and provides nursing care to critical care patients. Maintains supply of blood products. Maintains, operates and orders supplies for diagnostic equipment in tech station lab. Initiates and/or assists with obtaining laboratory values using instruments in the technician station. Assists in trouble-shooting analyzers in the tech station on an as needed basis.

ANESTHESIA :

  • Evaluates patients and generates veterinarian-approved anesthetic plan. Prepares patient for anesthetic procedures including inducing, intubating, and monitoring patient during procedure and during patient recovery. Cleans, assesses workability, performs minor maintenance, and identifies needed repairs of anesthetic equipment. Participates in on-call service to provide after-hours support for surgical cases.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING :

  • Per established protocol and techniques operates or assists with imaging equipment used in making radiographic/imaging examinations of Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) patient, teaching, and research animals on an as-needed basis. Set up and assists in the operation of diagnostic Ultrasound/CT/Nuclear Medicine/ MRI scans by clinicians. Radiographs postmortem specimens. Cleans, assesses workability, performs minor maintenance, and identifies needed repairs of fluoroscopy and other radiological equipment. Maintains film and digital archives and dosimetry badges.

30% STUDENT INSTRUCTION :

  • Provide demonstration, training, assistance, and instruction to veterinary students in the completion of general and advanced patient care procedures, recognizing and accommodating various learning styles and needs. Ensure that all students have equal access to tools, resources, and opportunities for hands-on practice. Instruct students in all aspects of the hospital and veterinary nursing, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and respected.

What We Require

Must have current certification as a Veterinary Technician and ability to obtain and maintain Oregon certification within six months of hire date AND , demonstrated experience in animal handling and restraint in a clinical setting, as well as demonstrated experience and knowledge of:

Drugs and medications typically used in veterinary care

Aseptic techniques, patient preparation and medical procedure assistance

Medical terminology

Operating room procedures

Anesthesia equipment and procedures

Record keeping procedures for patient charts

Animal anatomy and physiology

Lifesaving techniques for animals

Veterinary care procedures

Basic mathematics (including drug dosage and fluid rate calculation)

*General computer skills

Finalists for this position will be required to complete a criminal background history and motor vehicle background criteria form. Offers of employment are contingent upon a satisfactory background check. This position may require a valid driver license.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • 2 or more years of experience providing medical care for small and/or large animals in a veterinary teaching hospital or veterinary clinic.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with small and/or large animals in all aspects of veterinary nursing.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively instruct others in veterinary techniques.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • This position has no set schedule. Incumbents will be asked to pick-up shifts in advance for planned absences or same day, if there are sick calls.

  • These positions are located in an extremely busy Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

  • These positions may be exposed to noxious odors, infectious diseases, chemicals, gas anesthetics, radiation, loud noises, wet and slippery floors, and machinery.

  • These positions have access to controlled substances and are responsible for administering controlled drugs and maintaining controlled drug logs.

  • These positions will often be required to move, which may include lifting and/or carrying, up to 50 pounds, as well as pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 200 pounds.

  • These positions require stooping, bending, and kneeling on hard floors as necessary to provide care to animals.

  • Working with and around small and large animals has certain inherent risks. Animal handling and restraint can lead to injury. To minimize risk to employees in these positions, Oregon State University offers a rabies vaccination at the employer's expense (acceptance/declination at the discretion of the appointee).

  • These positions require overtime, evening, on-call, and/or weekend work.

  • These positions are deemed essential. Employees in these positions may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency, and other University work curtailments or closures.
