Law Library Service Desk Associate (Student)

The principal role of the Library Service Desk Assistant is toprovide excellent customer service within the Ehrhorn Law Libraryby answering basic directional, resource, and technical-relatedrequests from all library users. This is a position that demandscourteous and polite interactions with the service population, andan obvious, vigilant posture while staffing the service desk. Thisposition reports to the Access Services Coordinator. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides excellent customer service by answering library userquestions in person and on the phone, reserving study rooms for lawstudents and faculty, and locating physical and electronicresources for checkout or in-library use. Maintains and cares for library spaces and resources bycompleting hourly counts, reshelving and shifting books, checkingprinter supplies, reading the shelves, updating legal texts, andcleaning the library. Performs the general duties listed above with the goal ofmaintaining a clean and clutter-free environment conducive tostudy. Completes special projects assigned by the Access ServicesCoordinator/Supervisor. Keeps a vigilant posture while staffing the Library ServiceDesk to identify patrons who may need assistance and/or those whomay be exhibiting behavior that is problematic to others. Demonstrates the ability to work in and with diversepopulations, supporting an inclusive environment. Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representingthe University in an exemplary manner. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fosteringLU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions forChrist. Complies with the Liberty University School of Law businesscasual dress code. Additional information may be found here SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS Education and Experience Grade point average of 3.0 or above is preferred. One semester of college education is required. Federal Work Study status is preferred Previous customer service experience preferred. Some knowledge of the Library of Congress classification andcall number system preferred. ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THEJOB Communication and Comprehension Ability to communicate in an effective, professional manner ina customer service setting to convey clear, well-articulatedinformation to Liberty University School of Law’s community,patrons, and associates. Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order toconvey messages and correspond in an articulate and professionalmanner. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment anddiscretion. Promptness and reliability to follow scheduled hours. Willingness to communicate library policy to users. Displays an attitude of courtesy, respect, and tact in dealingwith others. Ability to read call number labels quickly andaccurately. Problem Solving Ability to reason intuitively, analyze information and events,and apply judgment to solve routine, complex problems. Ability to efficiently prioritize and complete tasks. Ability to resolve potentially problematic issues withpatrons. Physical and Sensory Abilities Occasionally required to travel to other areas of GreenHall. Frequently required to sit for extended periods to performdeskwork or type on a keyboard. Regularly required to see, hear, and speak in order toeffectively communicate with patrons. Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to moveabout the building. Regularly required to handle materials, reach overhead, kneel,or stoop in order to conduct business. Regularly required to lift 40 or fewer pounds and push bookcarts weighing up to 250 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS Work Environment The working environment in which one will typically perform theessential functions of this position is a climate-controlledsetting. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.Working environment may include facilitation of events outdoorsoccasionally. Work Hours Candidates must be open to the possibility of working late eveningsand/or weekends and must have safe transportation available to themat those times. Minimum weekly hours 12; maximum weekly hours18. Driving Requirements If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties andresponsibilities of the position, the use of one's personal vehicle(or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Proof of a validdriver's license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval,and liability insurance is required when driving in the performanceof the employee's position.
