Automotives Residential Faculty

Job Summary This position is scheduled to begin August 2026. The Automotive Faculty member provides high-quality instruction in the Automotive Service program using ASE‑aligned teaching methods and hands‑on training across all major vehicle systems. This position prepares students for ASE Entry‑Level and Professional‑Level certifications while supporting their academic progress through advising, academic support hours, and pathway guidance. The faculty member develops and delivers curriculum in classroom, hybrid, and laboratory environments while maintaining safe, well‑equipped instructional shops that meet ASE Education Foundation standards. Regular responsibilities include collaborating on equipment planning, supporting program recruitment and retention, and building strong partnerships with local dealerships, repair facilities, and industry organizations to enhance internships and graduate employment opportunities. Essential Functions Facilitates and instructs a diverse population of students in classroom and automotive laboratory settings across core ASE‑aligned disciplines, including electrical/electronics, brakes, steering and suspension, engine performance, HVAC, transmissions, and emerging technologies such as hybrid/EV and ADAS. Develops written syllabi, course outlines, assessments, and instructional materials aligned with ASE Education Foundation Master‑level standards. Evaluates student learning, monitors academic progress, prepares and grades exams/assignments, and maintains clean, safe, and OSHA/ASE‑compliant automotive shop environments. Performs basic maintenance on instructional equipment or coordinates repairs for lifts, alignment systems, scan tools, training vehicles, and specialized diagnostic tools. Promotes the Automotive Service program and recruits students through outreach events, local high school partnerships, dual enrollment, career fairs, advisory boards, and collaboration with industry employers. Supports, mentors, and educates adjunct faculty regarding curriculum updates, ASE standards, instructional best practices, safety requirements, and manufacturer‑specific training pathways (Mazda MAST, Mopar CAP, Subaru). Maintains professional competence by staying current with industry trends, ASE certifications, OEM service procedures, advanced diagnostics, EV/Hybrid technologies, and instructional best practices. Participates in professional development including conferences, OEM training, ASE renewal, coursework, and college‑sponsored workshops. Maintains academic support hours to assist, mentor, and advise new, prospective, and continuing students on coursework, ASE certification sequencing, manufacturer pathway options, program expectations, internships, and career placement opportunities. Participates in the academic life of the college by serving on campus and district committees, contributing to program review, supporting ASE accreditation requirements, collaborating with the Automotive Advisory Committee, and assisting with curriculum development, outcome assessment, and equipment planning. Minimum Qualifications Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught OR Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor's degree or higher OR A Master's degree or higher in the teaching field OR A Master's degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credits in the teaching field OR A Master's degree or higher in any field with a combination of 24 upper‑division and/or graduate credits in the teaching field Desired Qualifications Previous teaching or training experience (5+ years preferred) at a community college, university, OEM training center, dealership academy, military technical school, or industry‑based technician training institution. Significant professional experience (5+ years preferred) as an automotive technician, shop foreman, team lead, field service technician, or technical specialist with proficiency across multiple ASE A‑series areas; experience in drivability diagnostics, electrical/electronics, HVAC, or advanced vehicle technology preferred. Hands‑on proficiency with modern automotive diagnostic equipment, tools, and systems, including scan tools, oscilloscopes, factory scan tools, alignment machines, on‑car brake lathes, wheel/tire mounting tooling, wheel balancing equipment, EV/Hybrid high‑voltage safety tools, and OEM service information platforms such as AllData and manufacturer‑specific online systems. Ability to read and apply automotive wiring diagrams, relay logic, and system schematics, and use MS Word and MS Excel. Experience with curriculum development or training material creation, including laboratory exercises, task sheets, assessments, and applied learning modules aligned to industry standards such as ASE Education Foundation Master‑Level competencies. Manufacturer‑specific training experience (Subaru, Mopar CAP, Mazda MAST, Toyota T‑TEN, Honda PACT, GM ASEP, or similar), including familiarity with OEM repair procedures, online training systems, and corporate diagnostic workflows. Possession of relevant industry‑recognized certifications, including ASE Master Automobile Technician (A1‑A8), L1 Advanced Engine Performance, and G1 Maintenance & Light Repair. All instructors must hold current ASE certification in Auto Maintenance & Light Repair (G1), Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6), and in the Automobile area(s) (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A7, and/or A8) they teach. Demonstrated ability to maintain, diagnose, and troubleshoot training vehicles and laboratory equipment, including lifts, alignment systems, brake lathes, HVAC service equipment, electrical trainers, hybrid/EV service tooling, and shop safety systems. Experience mentoring or supervising technicians, interns, apprentices, or student cohorts, including supporting their career development, ASE test preparation, and industry placement. Special Working Conditions Work schedule varies; may be required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Climbing stairs and/or ladders to reach assigned areas along with working at heights. May be required to lift or carry up to 50lbs. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Local travel to multiple colleges, MCCCD campuses and area high schools is required; remote travel may be required for training or seminars.
