Lifeguard - Part Time

SALARY: 15.75/hourly


SUMMARY:


The primary role of the aquatic lifeguard is to insure client safety by actively guarding pool patrons and enforcing pool rules. The incumbent may be trained to teach swim lessons for in-house swim lesson program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Duties include but are not limited to:
• Lifeguard-specific duties include:
• Preventing injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
• Assisting class/aquatics instructors
• Recognizing and responding to emergency situations appropriately
• Instructor-specific duties include:
• Facilitating variety of classes
• Keeping daily records as needed
• Assisting patrons
• Watching pool patrons attentively and enforcing pool rules; maintaining a safe pool environment
• Assisting patrons in pool area as necessary
• Completing required health department information and forms
• Laundering of towels, shower curtains, and lost and found items
• Maintaining neat and organized equipment room
• Providing maintenance support (chemical tests, communicate maintenance order requests, etc.) as needed
• Responsible for general housekeeping
• Responsible for understanding and completing opening and closing procedures
• Attending meetings as required
• Adhering to agency policies and procedures
• Willing and able to "bring caring to life"
• Agreeing to work only at Boundary Waters Aquatic Center as a lifeguard/swim lesson instructor while employed by Douglas County
• Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)
• One year related work experience
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Must be 16 years of age or older

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
• American Red Cross First Aid/AED certified
• American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certified
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certified
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certified, or certification within six months of employment
• Other duty-specific certifications may be required during employment to satisfy specific assigned duties and responsibilities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of or ability to learn county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials as they relate to assignment
• Knowledge of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures
• Knowledge of American Red Cross swim levels, water safety courses, and course materials; ability to teach swimming and water safety skills
• Knowledge of specialized software, machinery, materials, terminology, and/or forms essential to the assignment
• Knowledge of program participants' interests, abilities, and behavior
• Skill in creating, maintaining, and organizing accurate, detailed, and complete records
• Skill in effective inter-personal and public relations and customer service; excellent oral and written communication skills to satisfactorily resolve conflicts and issues, and to explain established policies and procedures to students and the general public
• Skill in advanced swimming techniques and application of water safety skills
• Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
• Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
• Ability to demonstrate compassion, discretion, and respect in client interactions, with disabled individuals and others needing special assistance; ability to deal effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to handle confidential information professionally and to exercise discretion in performing assigned job duties; inability to maintain confidentiality will be grounds for dismissal

Position may require evenings, weekends, and holidays

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to participate in training for swim lessons instruction, lifeguard safety classes held monthly, keeping CPR and other certifications current
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
