Contract Role - Engineer, ML & AI (Scientific focused) - San Diego, CA

Summary

We are seeking an experienced Contractor who will work within the Machine Learning (ML) & AI team, part of our Precision Medicine group. This person will focus on developing and applying AI/ML tools (including the use of large language models and development of AI agents) and creating scalable solutions to drive new insights and therapeutic hypotheses, and support our growing needs in accordance with overall project goals that will impact precision medicine and drug discovery.

Responsibilities

• Work with the ML/AI team to develop, optimize, and maintain scalable AI/ML tools and pipelines for large-scale data analysis, deployment, and monitoring.
• Work with the ML/AI team to develop, optimize, and maintain agents, applications, and workflows based on LLMs for improving productivity and enabling research workflows.
• Work cross-functionally to streamline data selection, integration, storage, and application for training and running AI/ML tools.
• Work cross-functionally to identify and provide for downstream analysis and visualization needs.
• Contribute to organization-wide decisions on data formats, cloud infrastructure for computing and storage, and other components of our technology stack.
• Communicate with audiences at various technical and scientific levels.

Experience and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related technical fields.
• 4 years or more of AI/ML experience required.
• 2 years or more of relevant biotech and/or pharmaceutical industry experience required.
• Experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining AI/ML tools and pipelines at scale.
• Experience analyzing high-dimensional molecular data, such as genetics, transcriptomics, and proteomics.
• Experience with common bioinformatics tools, data types, and analyses.
• Experience with R and Python with emphasis on AI/ML libraries (PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc).
• Experienced with production coding standards, automated testing, and other engineering best practices.
• Experience with cloud compute and storage platforms.

Additional preferred qualifications

• Experience with containerization tools.
• Experience with data platforms such as RedShift, Snowflake, and Databricks, and data pipelining.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices in ML lifecycle.

• Track record of excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including providing concise summaries of complex data to empower decision-making.

The expected base pay range for this position is $110,000 – $145,000 plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits. The base pay range reflects the target range for this position, but individual pay will be determined by additional factors such as job-related skills, experience and relevant education or training. This range may be modified in the future.
