Substation P&C Designer

Substation P&C Designer WSP is currently searching for a Substation P&C Designer for our Duluth, GA office. In this role you will work with our Power & Energy Substation Team to design and support substation protection and control (P&C) systems for power transmission and distribution projects. Key Responsibilities Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing site data, surveys, and design documents to support substation P&C design. Use computer‑aided design and drafting (CADD) software to create high‑precision P&C drawings such as control schematics, wiring diagrams, interconnection diagrams, and panel layouts. Provide basic technical design assistance, including geometric dimensioning, tolerance, material calculations, and ensuring construction and maintainability per design standards. Verify calculations, designs, change orders, and interpret contract plans and specifications, escalating issues as needed. Collaborate with cross‑function teams and perform project work in alignment with engineering leads. Ensure plans comply with applicable codes, standards, and client/utility requirements. Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review and maintain accurate specifications of dimensions, materials, and procedures. Assist in training on substation P&C design tools and practices. Demonstrate basic knowledge of drafting and design support practices for P&C deliverables. Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct. Execute additional responsibilities as required to meet business needs. Required Qualifications High School Diploma. Minimum of 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in a substation design role supporting protection and control (P&C) for electrical power transmission and distribution projects, preferably in utility or industrial/commercial environments. Legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Familiarity with drafting and design support principles and practices. Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and compliance requirements for electrical/substation design. Excellent research, evaluation, and analytical skills. Effective interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences. Self‑leadership, attention to detail, and ability to multitask and follow instructions. Basic proficiency in technical writing, office automation, software, math, spreadsheets, and tools. Track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies. Flexibility to work schedules beyond the typical workweek as project demands. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s Degree in a related discipline. Experience with discipline‑specific design software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or MicroStation. Exposure to substation P&C deliverables such as panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules.
