Environmental Protection Specialist

Position Title: Environmental Protection Specialist Job ID: NPSGOGA-003-004 Location: San Francisco Program: NPS Wage/Hr: $51.00 Hours/Week: 20 Minimum Age: 55 This position supports the National Park Service’s Experienced Services Program (ESP), providing expertise in environmental planning, NEPA program support, and related project management within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Qualifications BA/BS Degree in Environmental Planning or a related field with a minimum of five years of experience. Advanced experience with environmental planning principles and excellent organizational and project management skills. Proficiency with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams, and MS Outlook. Duties NEPA Program Support Responsibilities: The enrollee will provide support to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) NEPA Program, working as part of an interdisciplinary team (IDT) to identify, assess, and incorporate environmental impacts into NEPA documents. Maintain Planning Environment Public Comment (PEPC) files, monitor up to 100 files, and mark each entry with the appropriate level of NEPA documentation. If a CE is required, initiate the CE process within five days of determination. Ensure an appropriate IDT is established and consulted for project impacts per their expertise. Review potential project impacts for all environmental program areas, working with the GGNRA project leader and NEPA Lead to ensure complete and accurate PEPC entry. Route CEs for review by all IDT members, ensuring completion according to the schedule set by the GOGA NEPA Lead and Project Leader. Review and prepare comments for up to two EAs/FONSI annually, coordinate input from all IDT members and GGNRA leadership, and track project schedules. Advise the GGNRA NEPA Lead and Leadership on NEPA matters, develop and maintain tracking methods, and provide professional advice on necessary NEPA documents for GGNRA actions. Attend up to 52 one‑hour meetings and up to 12 in‑person meetings or site visits annually, documenting key environmental points and communicating them via email within two business days. Other Occasional overnight travel to the park may be required. Air travel may be required depending on enrollee location. Physical requirements: primarily sedentary work at a computer; may involve walking up to one‑quarter mile on improved surfaces during park visits.
