Orientation and Mobility Specialist

POSITION TITLE: Orientation & Mobility Specialist POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Orientation and Mobility Specialist primary responsibilities will be to help youth/adults who are visually impaired or blind with support, guidance and assistance to achieve independence safely in their community and surroundings.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Evaluate and assess personal needs and environment of each individual’s home/school/work life Instruct individual and family on how to navigate or travel safely within the home and community Orient individuals with techniques to prepare for challenges and barriers in the school, home, job placement and community Teach techniques and awareness of each individual’s surroundings to achieve personal confidence and independence. Maintains strict confidentiality and protects Agency operations by keeping information confidential and secured. Conduct Functional Vision Evaluation/Assessments Understand use of and obtaining appropriate documentation (state and agency) needed for filing and billing purposes Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree (B. A.) required, Must have an Orientation and Mobility Certification for NYS; Masters Preferred Fluent in English and Spanish a plus A valid NY State Driver’s License and ability to drive and an acceptable driving record for agency insurance coverage are required. Must be able to travel locally and regionally for appointments.
