Manager Respiratory Therapy – Outpatient Services Under the general supervision of the Director Respiratory Therapy, the Manager Respiratory Therapy provides technical, operational and administrative leadership for the department. This includes managing all aspects of the day‑to‑day operations for the BMC campus, working closely with Medical Directors to ensure staff are providing the highest clinical care, interfacing with key stakeholders across the hospital, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and contributing to setting and executing on annual goals and departmental strategy. Key Responsibilities Manages employees, performs orientation and training, and conducts administrative and clerical tasks to facilitate effective intra/inter department business. Completes time schedules accurately and on time. Performs QA audits to ensure quality of care provided and departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Assists in the planning and development of departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Monitors subordinate performance and takes corrective action to ensure departmental standards are upheld. Performs written evaluation of subordinates. Coordinates activities of staff regarding cleaning and sterilizing of equipment to ensure current supply of equipment for patient care use. Assists in selecting candidates for employment, as directed. Conducts activities to ensure the further training and development of the respiratory staff and other patient care personnel to ensure the quality of respiratory care services. Orients new employees to ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures and standards of care. In‑services all staff in new therapeutics. Functions as a resource for complex patient care problems to respiratory care staff and other health care providers to ensure professional development and quality of patient care. Provides formal and/or clinical education to those individuals indicated in the time period directed. Attends physician rounds as appropriate. Ensures the continued professional educational development of staff to ensure clinical skills are up to date and staff are knowledgeable and capable of delivering the highest quality care. Maintains clinical competency in areas of responsibility to ensure the use of up‑to‑date methods in care giving. Attends continuing education classes during the year. Tracks and holds staff accountable for meeting educational goals. Attends all scheduled staff meetings or, if unable, accepts responsibility for reading staff meeting minutes. Maintains membership in professional organizations and reads professional journal articles each month. Follows all organization and departmental precautions and procedures in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment. Operates all respiratory care equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner. Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions requiring physical lifting or moving of patients or heavy equipment. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of established emergency, infection control and/or universal precaution procedures as required. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Provides departmental leadership in setting annual goals, developing strategy, and driving high performance. Works with Director of Respiratory Therapy to set, monitor, and meet targeted volume goals. Works closely with Respiratory Care Leadership to set, monitor, and meet targeted quality improvement goals. Builds buy‑in to goals with staff; creates dialogue with staff to provide constructive feedback. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment to meet the operational demands of the department. Collects and analyzes data related to performance of the department to convey key operating information to administration when requested. Responsible for communication within the Respiratory Care Department as well as throughout the organization to ensure that pertinent information is shared for effective operations. Assists in developing departmental budget within designated deadlines according to all budgetary policies and procedures. Works closely with Medical Directors on all of the above. Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards. Responsible to provide 24‑hour coverage on a rotating basis. Education Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred. Graduate of an AMA approved program in Respiratory Care. Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Current license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Respiratory Therapist and registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care. Experience At least 5 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist and 2‑3 years supervisory experience. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pulmonary physics, pulmonary pathophysiology, advanced respiratory care mathematics, blood gas chemistry, and pharmacology. Experience in assisting with bronchoscopy and pulmonary function testing. Understanding of specialty gas administration, lung‑protective ventilation techniques, and artificial airway management. Interpersonal skills necessary to manage, develop, motivate, and discipline staff and interact with stakeholders across the hospital. Ability to assure that all scheduled preventative maintenance is up to date and coordinate with vendors to ensure equipment maintenance and arrange loaners if necessary. Ability to explain hospital and department policies and procedures in difficult and complex patient care contexts. Ability to evaluate performance of staff members and develop sound policies and procedures. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Familiarity with data analysis. Experience in quality improvement and ability to interpret standard performance charts and metrics. Ability to rely on experience, judgment, and time‑management skills to plan and accomplish goals. Positive, team‑oriented attitude and a professional appearance. Assist with orientation and training of new staff. Compensation and Benefits $66,000 – $96,000 per year.
