Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer for the Utilities Department at its Toledo, OR facility. This role will support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of key mill utility systems that enable production across the site, including power generation and distribution, steam, water, compressed air, and related recovery and recausticizing assets. Our Manufacturing Engineers are responsible for monitoring asset performance, improving reliability, resolving short-term operating issues, and developing long-term strategies that improve equipment effectiveness and department results. Manufacturing Engineers will work closely with the department teams including Superintendents, Technical Assistants, and Operators.
The successful candidate should approach work with a business-owner mindset, excel at problem-solving, and be eager to collaborate with operations, maintenance, technical, and reliability partners to improve Utilities Department assets and support mill performance. This position is part of the Utilities Team, reporting to the Utilities Area Leader, and will work closely with operators, maintenance execution, technical engineering, environmental resources, and corporate support teams. Successful candidates will apply Principle Based Management (PBM) to create long-term value through a shared vision, respectful challenge, knowledge sharing, clear roles and responsibilities, and contribution-motivated ownership of results.

Georgia-Pacific Toledo is a producer of brown paper used to make cardboard and is a leader in recycling in the Northwest. The Utilities Department plays a critical role in supporting safe and reliable mill operations by providing the energy, steam, water, compressed air, and support systems needed to keep production assets operating effectively. The Toledo Mill is located within a 10-minute drive to the Pacific Ocean. Many outdoor activities are available near the mill including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and boating. What You Will Do
- Assist in development and implementing comprehensive asset strategies for assigned Utilities Department assets, including operating envelopes, operator basic care, parts strategy, optimization, condition-based monitoring, and predictive and preventative maintenance activities.
- Lead efforts to improve Utilities asset performance and reliability with regard to safety, environmental compliance, quality, utilization, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
- Apply PBM principles and the Five Dimensions—Vision, Virtue and Talents, Knowledge, Comparative Advantage, and Motivation—to help the Utilities Department identify and close gaps between current performance and what is possible.
- Use economic thinking, reality-based measures, and respectful challenge to prioritize work that creates the greatest long-term value for the mill.
- Build and share knowledge across operations, maintenance, reliability, engineering, vendors, and other GP/Koch resources to improve decision making and accelerate learning.
- Partner with operators and maintenance to identify critical equipment hazards in utility systems and mitigate the impact of human error where the highest levels of risk exist.
- Communicate with and help employees connect to the Utilities Department vision, priorities, and business objectives.
- Support Utilities operations teams by coaching operators on safe equipment operation, operator basic care, operating parameters, equipment changes or upgrades, and best practices.
- Work closely with operators, maintenance, and internal customers to troubleshoot steam, power, water, compressed air, recovery, process, quality, and equipment issues and evaluate improvement ideas.
- Work closely with shift supervision and the Utilities Area Leader to identify knowledge and operator capability gaps and provide support in developing or updating operating procedures.
- Lead the Root Cause Analysis process for Utilities equipment and process issues and execute effective corrective actions.
- Evaluate, approve, and prioritize Utilities equipment repairs and scheduled shutdown work; initiate capital projects as needed.
- Perform GEMBA walks in Utilities areas to improve employee engagement, asset care, and maintenance performance.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines, or in lieu of a degree a High School Diploma / GED and (4) years in a manufacturing or industrial operations environment.
- Experience troubleshooting and improving manufacturing equipment and processes.
- Experience with manufacturing equipment set-up, operation, or repair.
- Experience using data, measures, and cross-functional collaboration to identify gaps, improve reliability, and create long-term value.
- Must be able and willing to work in an industrial mill environment, including extended periods of time in areas that may be noisy, non-air conditioned, unheated, hot, humid, or around operating utility and production equipment.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and/or Project)
What Will Put You Ahead
- Experience working with power generation, boilers, steam systems, water treatment, compressed air, pumps, piping systems, recovery operations, or other industrial utility equipment.
- Experience in the pulp and paper industry.
- Experience with industrial controls, automation, instrumentation, or data-driven reliability tools.
- Experience applying PBM, Operations Excellence, Lean, reliability-centered maintenance, or another structured continuous improvement framework.
- Experience initiating and/or executing engineering projects.
- Experience with PI or other data historian programs.
