Custodian - 8 hours/day, 12 months/year @ Brookside Elementary

Definition An employee in this class performs a variety of manual activities cleaning and maintaining buildings, as well as controlling the building heating and air conditioning equipment. The employee follows established practices and cleaning schedules. Some experience in custodial work or equivalent training is required. Work is supervised by the Principal, Assistant Principal, or designee and reviewed through inspections, observations, work review, discussions, feedback from school personnel, and completion of projects and tasks. Duties and Responsibilities Perform a variety of manual activities in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules, including cleaning and maintaining buildings and maintaining grounds. Complete independent tasks in unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance functions, such as supplying and transporting materials, making minor equipment repairs, and reporting needed maintenance. Ensure the timely completion of assignments at school. Load and unload trucks; clean and sanitize spaces and equipment; transport equipment and perform general warehouse duties; verify delivery orders against invoices or work orders; place delivered items; deliver supplies to staff; maintain equipment according to schedule; manage fuel, oil, and other fluids for equipment. Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax, and buff floor surfaces. Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap. Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures. Dust and clean desks and other furniture. Empty trash receptacles; deposit recyclable material in proper receptacles. Sweep sidewalks and walkways outside buildings; police grounds, picking up debris; shovel snow and apply de‑icing compounds as necessary. Replace burned‑out light bulbs. Willing to clean after students in all situations. Raise and lower flags at the start and end of the workday. Open and secure buildings at the start and end of the workday; turn lights on and off; adjust heating or air conditioning as appropriate. Arrange furniture for meetings or other events. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, staff, and coworkers. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge and skills of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment and physical ability to use equipment (e.g., floor stripper, waxer, power buffer). General knowledge of routine maintenance requirements of buildings. Working knowledge and operation of tools and equipment used in routine cleaning. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision once the job is learned. Ability to operate lawn equipment such as weed‑eater, riding mower, hedge trimmer. Ability to work with others. Ability to communicate effectively with school administrators, staff, supervisors, students, employees, and the general public. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to identify cleaning needs and address them with appropriate methods and supplies. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by assignments. Ability to read, write, and keep records. Ability to perform simple calculations. Ability to prepare timesheets and maintenance reports using the prescribed format. Willing to clean after students in all situations. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects. Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, and lawn equipment including weed‑eater, riding mower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower. Not restricted from climbing ladders. Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, hazards associated with maintenance and equipment operations, gases, oils, and fumes. Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and that may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials. Minimum Training and Experience Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferred. Knowledge of basic methods, supplies, and tools used in custodial work, preferred. Two years’ experience in cleaning methods and equipment used in the cleaning and appearance of buildings, preferred.
