Veterinary Technician, Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement Job no: 501493 Work type: Regular Full-Time Location: Glassboro, NJ Categories: School of Veterinary Medicine Position Summary The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University is seeking Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians to join our new veterinary program and teaching hospital, to serve within our ambulatory Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement (SMCE) service. The main teaching hospital is located 1.5 miles from our main Glassboro campus. The SMCE consists of a mobile RV‑style clinic based out of the veterinary teaching hospital, and a satellite spay‑neuter clinic located in Clayton, NJ, which is 12 minutes from main campus. Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is a new and innovative veterinary teaching hospital for small animals, equipped with state‑of‑the‑art equipment. The teaching hospital is designed to accommodate multiple specialty departments, including anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry and oral surgery, diagnostic imaging, emergency/critical care, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, primary care, and a full pharmacy with sterile compounding capabilities. Reporting Structure The Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians will report directly to the Veterinary Technician Manager. Required Qualifications & Salary Information Veterinary Technicians (Credentialed, evidence of passing the VTNE) Level 1 Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification eligible or achieved, or equivalent specialty‑level expertise Minimum 5 years of clinical experience Probationary Rate: $32.25/hour Job Rate: $35.40/hour Max Rate: $38.05/hour Level 2 Minimum 5 years of clinical experience Probationary Rate: $28.05/hour Job Rate: $31.00/hour Max Rate: $33.20/hour Level 3 Minimum 3 years of clinical experience Probationary Rate: $23.08/hour Job Rate: $26.55/hour Max Rate: $29.97/hour Level 4 Minimum 1 year of clinical experience Probationary Rate: $19.87/hour Job Rate: $22.48/hour Max Rate: $24.86/hour Veterinary Assistants (Non‑Credentialed) Level 1 Associate degree or higher Minimum 5 years of clinical experience Probationary Rate: $23.08/hour Job Rate: $26.55/hour Max Rate: $29.97/hour Level 2 Associate degree or higher Minimum 3 years of clinical experience Probationary Rate: $19.87/hour Job Rate: $22.48/hour Max Rate: $24.86/hour Hourly rates reflect each position’s pay post 7/1/26 per the collective bargaining agreement. Employees must have 4+ years of applicable experience to be hired above the probationary rate. Preferred Qualifications Willing to work flexible hours (days, swing) and weekends as needed in variable locations. Previous experience working in a teaching environment. Previous experience working in a shelter medicine practice, access to care, or HQHVSN surgical setting. Adaptable to a fast‑growing and developing workplace. Experience or comfort driving an RV or oversized vehicle. Excellent understanding of medical terminology, medications, calculations, and common surgical procedures. Excellence and interest in further developing interpersonal skills in relation to co‑workers, clinicians, students, staff, and clients. Working Conditions Hazards such as slips, trips, falls, unpleasant odors, noise, animal feces and urine, potential bites, kicks, or scratches. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs, radiation, toxic waste, and chemical hazards such as disinfectants, pesticides, and latex. Animals treated may include small mammals, large mammals, livestock, reptiles, avians, and other exotic animals. Travel required; work locations may vary and a valid driver’s license with reliable personal transportation is required.
