RN Neurology

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Neurology Unit provides specialized nursing care to patients with neurological disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Guillain Barre Syndrome. The role involves utilizing nursing and critical thinking skills in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment within a Joint Commission accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level 4 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. The nurse collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate and expert care, employing advanced technology like continuous video EEG for seizure evaluation and treatment. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to patients with acute and complex neurological conditions.
• Perform patient assessments and monitor neurological status using telemetry and NIHSS protocols.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized care plans.
• Operate and monitor continuous video EEG technology for seizure evaluation.
• Respond to patient needs and emergencies promptly and effectively.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and clinical observations.
• Participate in unit charge nurse duties as required.
• Support quality improvement and patient safety initiatives within the unit.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Registered Nurse license valid in New York State only.
• Minimum of two (2) years nursing experience, preferably in telemetry or neurological care.
• Telemetry experience is required.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Strong critical thinking and communication skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in a Comprehensive Stroke Center or Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
• Familiarity with continuous video EEG monitoring technology.
• Experience in fast-paced acute care or neurological specialty units.

Special Considerations:

• Must be willing to work rotating day, evening, and night shifts.
• Availability to work weekends, holidays, on-call, and callback as needed.
• Charge nurse responsibilities may be required based on unit needs.
• Work environment includes care of patients with complex neurological and critical conditions.

Scheduling:

• Rotating shifts including day, evening, and night schedules.
• Workweek may total approximately 48 hours billed at regular time.
• Shift assignments are based on unit staffing needs and may include weekends and holidays.
